About Captain or Colonel Andrew Pickens, Sr.
In 1811, Andrew's son, General Andrew Pickens, wrote the following letter to General "Light Horse Harry" Lee describing his family's movement's from the time of his birth in 1739:
"I was born in PA, Paxton Township, on the 19th Sept. 1739. My father removed with his family when I was very young to Virginia, and settled for a few years west of where Staunton now stands about 8 miles, and in the year 1752 or 3, removed to the Waxhaws and was amongst the first settlers of that part of South Carolina. My father and mother came from Ireland. My father's progenitors emigrated from France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes."
In 1740 there was a large movement of Scotch-Irish immigrants from Pennsylvania to Virginia. The Governor of Virginia offered special inducements to encourage settlement of the territory west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Under the existing laws of Virginia, a freeholder who brought persons into the colony at his own expense was entitled to a certain number of additional acres of land.
