A Conservative councillor and keen horsewoman, she became joint master of both East Dulverton and Exmoor Foxhounds, having visited kennels and absorbed pedigree lines each week after church as a child. She gained her knowledge and enthusiasm for hunting from her father, Charles Wood, who was Conservative MP for York. Racing was another passion. ...

Lady Caroline Gosling was one of the least self-conscious of women, and her open, friendly manner and remarkable memory for names meant that she was able to mix easily with the local Exmoor farmers and do much to smooth the path of hunting in the area. Her skills in diplomacy led Captain Ronnie Wallace to invite her to become joint master of the Exmoor Foxhounds in 1990...

...Caroline Gosling provided the essential anchor on the moor, charming farmers and landowners and rallying local hunt supporters. She never missed a fundraising whist drive or failed to turn up to judge a family dog show. She was much in demand at these latter events, even if heart sometimes overcame head and she ended up giving the prize to the one-eyed mongrel rather than the pedigree canine, when she thought the owner deserved it. ...
