About Carterette de Havilland
Carterette married 2 May 1771 to Peter de Havilland, son of John de Havilland & Mary Dobrée. They were married 'en chambre' by the Reverend Joshua Le Marchant, who had been authorised by the Dean to conduct a private ceremony, without prior publication of banns.
Death and Burial: Carterette died 12 Oct 1789. "Peter's wife had suffered for some time from dropsy, a condition often symptomatic of heart disease. During the first days of October, 1789 she was unwell, but digitalis gave her some relief. On 11 October Peter was planning to dine with friends but was reluctant to leave Carterette. She insisted that he go and went herself to visit Mrs. Le Mesurier at Les Beaucamps. In the evening she rode home pillion behind de Havilland's valet. She was taken ill as they approached the Castel church and died lying against the hedge with the valet and one or two people who happened to be nearby in attendance. One of these men sent his servant to fetch de Havilland, who arrived to find his wife dead. She was thirty-nine years of age and was buried at St. Andrew's Church."
