About Catharina Adriana Malan / Laubscher
Catharina and her second husband, Rudolf Loubser (Rudolph Johannes Laubscher) undertook major renovations to the wine cellar, slave lodge, mill and homestead at "Vergelegen". The homestead took on its present H-shape with "voorhuis" and "agterkamer", and four side rooms. The West-facing front gable with its curvilinear outline, dates from this period.
Twice widowed, Catherina sold "Vergelegen" and "Morgenster" to Wouter de Vos in 1796. "Vergelegen" reverted to the family when her son-in-lay, Marthinus Wilhelmus Theunissen, bought it two years later.
A brother-in-law of Jacobus Malan, who was living on "Vergelegen", caused a scandal in 1778 by eloping with a slave woman : he was David Malan and she, Zara, a slave belonging to Jurgen Radyn. They disappeared into the interior and after a time David was declared dead. However, he reappeared many years later, was re-united with his wife and settled in the eastern frontier. Riaan Malan refers to the episode in his book, "My Traitor's Heart"
