About Catharine Updike
We have chosen to spell Catharine Updike (Thurston)'s name the way the tombstone spells it instead of the way that the author of the Find-A-Grave memorial spelled it. Still, if you are looking for additional information about this woman, you might try the "Catherine" spelling as well as the "Catharine" spelling.
Two years later...
We have those "other sources". They all spell her name Catherine. They agree almost totally with our date of birth, place of birth, and place of death. But they ALL say that the death was 6 / 6 / 1900.
What might have happened? This woman is the daughter-in-law of a man who fought for George Washington in the American revolution--and all of the family MIGHT have been misreading my Aunt Zelma's handwritten "six" in her DAR application as a zero.
I'm sure my Aunt Zelma had excellent hand writing, but for now I'm going with what the tombstone says--as Aunt Zelma herself would have done.
