About Celian Toby
The partially illegible handwritten entry for Celian Toby is recorded in the 2014 Wyckoff transcript of the 1907 Wooster Roll as "Chenia Tobi". The partially illegible writing on her 1920 death certificate has been recorded in the Ontario Archives transcript as "Celian Toby". No traditional name is recorded on the Wooster Roll. In 1907 when Celian was approaching age 2 she was living at Honey Harbour, Ontario where she held no rights in Canada.
The 1907 Wooster Roll does not include an entry for Celian's mother Mary Moreau (recorded in partially illegible writing on Celian's death certificate as "Moray Moreau", probably because her racial origin was French, not Potawatomi. Because of the French background of Celian's mother, Celian's death certificate labels her racial origin as "French" and makes no reference to her father's Potawatomi racial origin. However, from Celian's death certificate we learn that she was age 13 when she died on January 26, 1920 from "Consumption". She was buried on January 28, 1920 in Waubaushene, a community close to Port Severn where her mother Mary Moreau was born. Celian's birth year and father's name match the 1907 Wooster Roll. Her occupation was recorded as "housekeeper".
Celian is not a common name and it is unusual for a female to have this male name.
See https://translate.google.ca/translate?hl=en&sl=fr&u=http://www.pren... "Célian is a male name quite rare, but is increasingly attributed recent years. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, more than 4,000 French are named Célian."
