Notes
Ann Yowell Cook, Yowell and Related Families, 7:
"Author's Note: The basis for the determination that Christoph Uhl came to Virginia from Germany is and article in a book published by the American Genealogical Lending Library, Salt Lake City, May 1990. The book, "Before Germanna," authored by Johni Cerny and Gary J. Zimmerman is No. 9 in a series and concentrates on the Zimmerman, Yowell, Mercklin, Wegman and Leatherer families. Add to this well-researched material is the fact that Clark S. Yowell in his book," Yowell, A Genealogical Collection," never offered any proof of a connection between Richard Yowell of Westmoreland Co., VA and Christopher Yowell of Culpeper/Madison Cos., VA. During the years of my research I never once came accross any reference to Richard having a son named Christopher though I read every document (to my knowledge) in Northumberland and Westmoreland Co., VA. that referred to the Yowells. Another factor that virtually made his birthplace a certainty was his own statement that he was from Wurttemberg [sic], Germany in his application for citizenship along with other members of the Hebron community. A.Y.C."

Later arrival to the Germanna community between 1717-1725 from Sulzfeld, Baden (now Baden-Württemberg, Germany)

Ann Yowell Cook, Yowell and Related Families, (Fort Worth, TX: 1994), 1, and other sources identify additonal daughter Rebecca. Further research has shown her to be a Swindle rather than a Yowell.

Email correspondence from Elke Hall to Germanna_Colonies-L@rootsweb.com, Re: The 1922st Note in a Series on the Germanna Colonies, 18 July 2004 (https://mlarchives.rootsweb.com/listindexes/emails?listname=germann...: accessed 6 January 2023):
The author Henry Z Jones, Jr found a list in the Public Record Office in London, the document is a list of names in the form of a petition, headed by the statement:
"A Liste of Those Poor Palatines, Wirtembergers, Etc. Who Are Willing to Return into Germany, and Humbly Desiring His Majesty's Most Gracious Bounty, for Their Transportation into Holland, for Their Charges to Their Own Country, Taken the 16th September 1717."
On this list are several names which later appear in Germanna, Christofle Uhl, Frederic Kapler, and Hans George Long, also Hans Martin Volck, which I believe might be Hans Martin Walk, who married Michael Clore's daughter Catherine in 1734.

Email correspondence from John Blankenbaker to Germanna_Colonies-L@rootsweb.com, Re: (1806) Germanna Colonies, History of, 14 November 2003 (https://mlarchives.rootsweb.com/listindexes/emails?listname=germann...: accessed 6 January 2023):
On 16 September 1717 (OS), a number of German-speaking individuals in London petitioned His Majesty for transportation costs to Holland and to their own country. We do not know whether they obtained the support and whether they went "home." The list of names is called the 5th Return Party but that represents an assumption. We do know that there are Germanna names on this list that came in a couple of years after the Second Colony. They may have been able to stay around London until they were able to come later. Four of the names are consecutive and of special interest to us. They are: Hans George Forchel 4 persons
Christofle Uhl 8 persons
Frederic Kapler 3 persons
Hans George Long 4 persons
Some of these spellings are not German which may mean the list was prepared by an Englishman. The latter three names are recognized as slightly later immigrants (after the Second Colony) to Virginia. Christopher Uhl (Yowell) and Frederick Kapler were from Sulzfeld, the same village that Christopher Zimmerman came from. Hans George Long (Lang) did not patent land in Virginia until 1731. He referred, in his proof of importation, to arriving in 1717 by which he may have meant his original departure from Germany. Johann Georg Förckel had a daughter baptized in London with sponsors Matthias Schmidt and Maria Barbara Weiland (Wayland). His origin is unknown. He was also a sponsor for Matthias Schmidt's child. He seems to be closely aligned with the individuals who formed the nucleus of the Second Colony but his fate is unknown. This list comes from the Public Record Office as their document T.1 / 208 and was transcribed by Marlene Groves, CG, and published by Jones & Rohrbach in "Even More Palatine Families."
Note from CCF: T 1/208, Treasury Board Papers and Letters, 1717 July 20 - Oct 14, Catalog listing: https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C5319265: accessed 25 August 2022

28 September 1728 Christpher Awell of St. George's Parish, Spotsylvania County received a grant of 400 acres adjoining Michael and John Claure [sic] (Virginia Land Office Patent Book 14: 103).

12 September 1733 Christopher Awell received a grant of 124 acres in St. Mark's Parish, Spotyslvania County and the great fork of Rappahannock River adjoining Michael Awell [Oneal?] and Michael Clause [sic] (Virginia Land Office Patent Book 15: 120).

1739 Christopher Ouell taxed for 2 tithes in Orange County, Virginia (Orange County, Virginia 1739 Tithables List, Precinct of John Mickell, images, Family History Library, Salt Lake City, UT, US/Can Film 1869674, Item 5, DGS 7856139, FamilySearch, (http://www.familysearch.org: accessed 3 November 2018), Search > Catalog > Place (Search Term: United States, Virginia, Orange) > Taxation > Tithables, 1736-1782 > Image 463.).

David Ouell also appears on the 1739 tithe list, indicating he is the only son over 21 in that year. Since the 1990 discovery of the family origins in Sulzfeld, Baden (Johni Cerny and Gary J. Zimmerman, Before Germanna #9: The Ancestry of the Zimmerman, Yowell, Mercklin,Wegman and Leatherer Families (Bountiful, UT: American Genealogical Lending Library, 1990).), some researchers have assigned the eldest son Jerg Friedrich Uhl as the same as son John Yowell. As John was probably under 21 in 1739 and his first child was born in 1770, this does not seem likely. First record of John is the 1742 O.S. / 1743 N.S. deeds of lease and release from Christopher.

25 October 1739 Christopher Yowell was made overseer of the road in the room of Zachary Martin. He was ordered to keep the bridges of the road in repair and cause the highways to be cleared (Orange County, Virginia Order Book 2 1739-1741: 78.).
