Clara Rockmore was a virtuosa performer of the theremin, an electronic musical instrument.
Clara Rockmore studied at the Imperial Conservatory of St Petersburg. She was a child prodigy on the violin and entered the conservatory at age five studying under the great violin virtuoso Leopold Auer. She was the youngest student ever admitted to that school. She was unable to pursue the violin past her teen years due to health problems but then took up the theremin and acquired a mastery of this instrument with exceptional skill. Clara Rockmore made many orchestral appearances in New York and Philadelphia. She also made a recording with her sister, Nadia Reisenberg in 1977 called ‘The Art of the Theremin’.
