William UNDERWOOD ( I ) seems to be the same William UNDERWOOD who was the 2nd surviving son of Edmund UNDERWOOD, Grocer of London, and ROSE (FAIRCLOUGH), his wife. This William may have been born as early as 1606, and probably in County Kent, or somewhere outside of London, due to yet another plague infestation. If he is the same child, then he was not christened until he was 6 years old at St. Stephen Walbrook in London in 1612, or possibly earlier in a different church that researchers have yet to confirm.

This William UNDERWOOD seems to have died between the years 1637 and 1644, and a tentative approximate date is given as circa 1642. His birth and death are both current mysteries of sorts.

(Biography a work in progress.)

Unconfirmed dates and citations. No verification that the christening date and marriage to Margaret Mason apply to this William Underwood.

No verification that Edmund Underwood and Alice Papworth are his actual parents. There are several William Underwoods born about 1606+/- in various parts of England who could be our William. More research is needed to determine his correct parents.

William was born in 1606 at Kent, England.[7] He was christened on 19 April 1612 at St. Stephen, county Middlesex, England.[7] He was a son of Edmund Underwood[7][8] and Alice Papworth.[citation needed]

Marriage to Margaret Mason about 1625.[9]

"Untangling the Underwood - A Combs &c. William Underwood (and also his sister, Ann?) were issue of the earlier marriage.

William Underwood was born around 1600, probably in England. He married a woman named Margaret about 1630, in England. Her family name might have been Masan. They came to Virginia, where William died in Lancaster County about 1640. Margaret then married Capt. John Upton of Isle of Wright. Upton died in 1651, and she later married Capt. Thomas Lucas. Margaret died sometime after 1656.

From England, Sir William Bekkeley granted William Underwood gentleman, 1400 acres near Rapahanook River in 1650

Capt. William Underwood of Isle of Wight and Lancastershire. Member of the House of Burgess in 1632. This generation and his children is conjecture on my part from traditions passed down in this family combined with patterns of early Underwoods living in America. It's entirely possible that the family that includes William as a child is simply a different branch of Underwoods that does not include our Thomas directly. However, as they have his first wife marrying him in 1621 and they do not have any listed children before 1629, I'm suggesting that Thomas and George also belong in this family. They came over on the same ship at the same time... and both disappeared from Old Rappahonnak Co, VA records after their arrival. There is a tradition passed down in the family that Thomas was one of 3 brothers that migrated together, with all 3 dispersing in different directions after they arrived. Margaret Mason, his wife, married John Upton after William's death. John Upton's will only names their children William, Elizabeth, Sarah and Margaret Underwood which accounts for all the children still living in the area except for Mary.

Possible christening date and place: 18 Apr 1606, 19 Apr 1612, St. Stephens, Walbrook, London, London, England (IGI (International Genealogical Index)) Both list the father as Edmund or Edmond Underwood.

Alternate death date: 17 May 1673 (IGI (International Genealogical Index))

St. Giles Cripplegate London Wall, EC2 The first church here dates to 1090. John Milton is buried at St. Giles.
