Biography

Colonel Edward Jones III was a Colonel in the North Carolina Miitia, a Burgess in the Colonial Assembly of North Carolina and lawyer appointed as one of the Justices of the Peace for Granville County when it was organized in 1746. Gideon Macon was another J.P. Robert Jones, Jr. was the King's Attorney.

Jones applied for a grant of four hundred acres in the new precinct of Edgecombe. The tract was described as lying "on the south side of Shocco Creek, beginning at a red oak at the mouth of Jumping Branch." Three other grants were made to Jones that same year. Judge Jones' Last Will was dated Nov 16, 1750 and probated on Dec 3, 1750.Will of Edward Jones, Granville County, North Carolina.

Edward sold his lands in Virginia and moved to North Carolina in Note: 1736. He settled on Shoco Creek near Gideon Macon.. His will was Note: dated 16 NOV 1750 Note: Note: Thomas Allen's notes: Edward emigrated from Gloucester County VA Note: about the same late 1730's and settled in the Shocco Creek Note: neighborhood near Gideon Macon. In 1738 he applied for a grant Note: of 400 acres in a new precinct of Edgecombe on the south side of Note: Shocco Creek. By 1744 he had established title to still more Note: land on Sandy Creek and the south bank of the Roanoke River. In Note: 1748 he was Road Commissioner. From 1748 to 1751 he was member Note: of the General Assembly from Granville County His will was made Note: in 1750 and probated in 1752. Date of death could be 1751.

Edward Jones to oldest son, Sugar Jones the use of my rifle gun until my son Edward is 16, then to him; to my daughter Priscilla Macon, 5 shillings; to my daughter Sarah Jones, a Negro named Sarah and and a horse called Swabtail and her two young colts, when she marries or attains her 18 years; to daughter Obedience Jones, a Negro named Ben and a mare called Pollywats and the increase when she is 18 or marries; to son James, a Negro called George and a boy called Phil, and all land below Cabin Branch south of Deep Bottom to Danl... Underwood's land and a mare called Jamsey's mare and a horse called Brandy, when he is 21; to son Edward Jones, the land whereon I now live and all land that belongs to it, about 852 acres, my grist mill, a mulatto girl called Alice, a mulatto man called Frank and a Negro man called Frank and a man called Gloster and other horses, when 21 years old; to Rebecca Jones, a Negro called Winney and a feather bed and furniture when she is 18 years old or married; son Rabone Jones; daughter Abigale Jones to my wife Abigale Jones for life and widowhood then to to my five children: Sarah, James, Abigale, Rabone, Obedience Jones; to son Daniel Jones.

There are some sources that list his place of death as Edenton, Chowan Co., NC.

There are theories as to his parentage. I am not able to prove nor disprove them. Amongst those are Edward Jones II and wife Deborah Exum; Edward Jones and wife Jane Harris. Edward Jones and wife Mary Batte (who also married his brother).

Granville County was formed in 1746 from Edgecombe County, NC. The area began to be settled about 1715. Edward and Abigail Jones settled in the area near Shocco Springs and Fishing Creek circa 1736.
