Do not confuse this Cornelis Gerritz van Nieuwkerken (went to South Africa and is the progenitor of the van Niekerk tribe) with the other Cornelis Gerritz van Nieuwkercke (went to USA and is the progenitor of the Newkirk tribe) The SA progenitor is NOT the son of Gerret Cornelisse Van Newkirk (Van Nieuwkirk). WRONG Y-DNA which proves that he is not the son of Gerret. Stop merging this false information please.

The SA progenitor's Y-DNA is I-M253. At this stage we do not know who his parents are. We do not know where he was born. There is a theory that he came to South Africa as young boy in 1671.

The USA progenitor's Y-DNA is R-M269, He was born 24 July 1631 in Slichtenhorst, Gelderland, Netherlands. His father was Cornelisse Mattheuse van Nieukerk and his mother Bijtie Gerrits. Dozens of USA Newkirk's have shown R-M269 to be correct. This is a DIFFERENT Newkirk line that does not match up. Cornelis was die stamvader van die Van Niekerks in Suid-Afrika.

In 1671 het twee broers Dirk en Jakob van Niekerk na die Kaap gekom in diens van die Hollands Oos-Indiese-Kompanjie. Hulle was van Nijkerk, Gelderland. Albei is later terug na Nederland, maar 'n seun (Cornelis) is agtergelaat. Geboortedatum is nie bekend nie. Dit is nie bekend of hy een van hulle se seun was nie. Die inligtingsbron oor die twee broers en die datum waarop hulle na SA gekom het is onbekend.

Die eerste melding van die SA stamvader in SA rekords is in 1691 toe hy getroud is met Maria van der Westhuizen. Sy naam is toe opgeteken as Cornelis Gerritz van Nieuwkerk. Op die monsterrollen word hy in 1692 genoem as Cornelis Gerritz and in 1693 as Cornelis van Nijkerken. Hy onderteken 'n dokument in 1693 met die naam Cornelis van Nijkerken. Hy was 'n burger te Drakenstein. In 1706 het hy deelgeneem aan die stryd teen Wilhem Adriaen van der Stel en is met nege ander vryburgers voor die Raad van Justisie gedaag weens opstand teen die owerheid. Maria van der Westhuizen: Sy was gedoop 6 Oktober 1675 die oudste kind van Pieter van der Westhuizen en Maria Hendriks Winkelhausen. Hulle het ook n paar kinders gehad, wat haar die unieke titel gee as stammoeder van die van Niekerks, sowel as die Walterse in Suid Afrika.
