About Dame Alice Stourton, Lady Daubeney

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Stourton-36

Alice Stourton was born circa 1432 at Preston Plunknett, Somersetshire, England (aged 7 in Oct 1439), a daughter of John Stourton and his third wife, Katherine Payne.[1][2] A writ was issued on 13 March 1439 for her father's Inquisition Post Mortem at Yeovil. It found that he held no lands or tenements of the king in chief, or any other, in demesne or service. His three daughters, Cecily, wife of Sir Thomas Curiell, aged 34 years or more; Joan, wife of John Sydenham Esq, aged 21 or more; and Alice, aged 7 or more, were his heirs.[3]

Alice married (first) William Daubeney, MP for Bedfordshire (1448-49) and Sheriff of Cornwall (1453-53), son of Sir Giles Daubeney and Joan Darcy.[4] Sir William Daubeney died 2 January 1460/1.[1][4] There were at least three children from this marriage:

  1. Sir Giles Daubeney (first Baron Daubeney), b. 1451/2; d. 1508; m(1) Elizabeth Arundel; m.(2) Katherine Chidlock; made Lord Chamberlain of England (1495)[4]
  2. Eleanor Daubeney Newton, m(1) Symon Blount; m(2) Richard Newton[5]
  3. James Daubeney, m. Elizabeth Pauncefoot[6]

She married (second) Robert Hill, son of Ralph Hill of Houndston, Somerset, and Edith Mode, of Gloucester.[1][2] They had one son and two daughters:[1]

  1. Giles Hill (of Honiton),[1] m. Alice (or Agnes) Brent[7]
  2. Margaret Hill Luttrell, m. Sir Hugh Luttrell[1][7]
  3. Jane Hill Wadham, m. Sir Nicholas Wadham[1][7]

Robert Hill died testate 8 September 1493 and was buried at Dunster, Somerset.[1]

The date of Alice's death is uncertain.

Research Notes

Marlyn Lewis adds a second daughter, Ellen Daubeney, from Alice's first marriage to William Daubeney,[8] however the existence of this daughter is completely unsourced and she is not mentioned in any pedigrees of the Daubeney family.

Alice Stourton, who was aged 7 years in 1439, and from her father she inherited Pendomer Manor, &c., under his settlement and entail as before shewn under his name, which premises were eventually disentailed by her descendant, Henry Daubeney, created Earl of Bridgewater, and sold by him. She married (1) William Daubeney. Lord of Barrington, Co. Somerset, son and heir of Sir Giles Daubeney, knight, and consequently ancestor of Henry Daubeney, created Earl of Bridgewater ; and (2) Robert Hill, of Houndston Manor, Co. Somerset, who died in 1493, seised of that Manor, &c., his arms, impaling those of Stourton, were setup in Dunster Church, (Harl. MS., 1559, fo. 235.) Hoare in his copy of the College of Arms pedigree, says she married, 1. — William Daubeney, Esq., and 2.— Robert Hill, although Edmondson only gives the first husband, but the Visitation for Co. Worcester confirmed Hoare, calling her father Jenkin Stourton. Harleian Manuscript 1074, likewise supported these marriages, although wrongly stating her mother to have been Alice Peny, her father's second wife, but this was corrected by the old pedigree of 1509, which added that her first husband was Lord of Baryngton. We find that on the north wall of Little Cheney Church, Co. Dorset, there was erected a monument to the memory of her son, George Daubeney, on which the arms of Daubeney, Stourton, de Bosco, Moyne, &c., appeared on the dexter side. Her daughter, Jane Hill, married Sir Nicholas Wadham, of Merryfield, Co. Somerset, knight, who by his will, of 25th Nov., 1539, proved [15 Spert] 30th Jan., 1542, appointed Roger Fauntleroy an executor, and Lord Stourton an overseer ; and the will of his wife, Dame Jane Wadham, was made 22nd July, 1557, proved [29 Wrastley] 31st August, 1557. We read under Charles, 8th Lord Stourton, of William Fauntleroy and Cecily, his wife, Lessees of Stourton Manor, being illegally disturbed in their possession of that property by the action of this Agnes Rice, whose mother afterwards married the above Henry Daubeney, created Earl of Bridgewater. All the authorities shew that Sir John Stourton, created Baron of Stourton, Co. Wilts., married Margery, daughter of Sir John Wadham, of Merryfield, Co. Somerset, knight.
