Biography
Daniel Hicks is said to have been born between 1730-1740 on "the family estate at Rockyhock (likely Rockyhock Creek) near Edenton, Chowan County, North Carolina, British Colonial America, the son of Captain Thomas W. Hicks (1710–1775) and Elizabeth Jordan (1710–1779). Chowan was formed in 1670 as a precinct in Albemarle County. It was named in honor of the Indian tribe Chowan, which lived in the northeastern part of the Colony. It is in the northeastern section of the State and is bounded by Albemarle Sound, Chowan River, and Bertie, Hertford, Gates and Perquimans counties. In 1720, Edenton, which was named in honor of Governor Charles Eden, was established. In 1722 it was designated and has continued to be the county seat.
He reportedly moved up to Lunenburg County, Virginia, in about 1745.
He is said to have married Lucy Butler, daughter of John Butler around 1764 in Charlotte County, Virginia. The Butlers came from Culpeper County, Virginia and were neighbors of the Hicks' on Sandy Creek in Charlotte County. This group started migrating down to Troy, in Montgomery County, North Carolina in the late 1760s. Daniel and Lucy's oldest children, including Littleberry, William and Robert, were reportedly born in Charlotte County. Son Joshua was reportedly born in North Carolina after the family had moved down to Montgomery County, shortly before the Revolutionary War. The family was reportedly there before 1773. The Butler Family had reportedly moved there several years earlier. Daniel reportedly bought land at Dick's Creek near [southeast of] present day Star, [Montgomery County], North Carolina. His land adjoins what is now a days the county airport [Montgomery County Airport]."

Daniel appears in Montgomery County, North Carolina, in 1787,[1] and 1790.[2]
He reportedly died in about 1790, most likely in Montgomery County.

Notes
Some researchers also identify Daniel as the father of a George Amos Hicks, Sr (1789–1850), but the original source of this claim is unclear. Most likely, those researchers are referring to George Hicks, born in about 1792, who was more likely Daniel's grandson, the son of Robert, given Daniel's supposed death in 1790 and the fact that his wife Lucy was likely past normal childbearing age when George was born.
