Biography

Dea. John Jackson was born about 1615 in England. He was the first settler of Cambridge Village in Massachusetts and died there. He had, in this country, by two wives, five sons and ten daughters, and at the time of his decease, about fifty grandchildren. He died Jan. 30, 1674-5.

Disputed origins

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Jackson-336

The origins and parentage of John Jackson of Cambridge are unknown.

Incorrect parentage. He is not the son Christopher Jackson baptized at Stepney, near London on 6 June 1602 as is very frequently said. . Christopher Jackson's son John died shortly after birth and was buried on 11 June 1602.

Intentional fraud?: That John Jackson was a son of Christopher Jackson was first published in A History of the Early Settlement of Newton in 1854 which in turn cites research carried out in England by H.G. Somerby in 1851.[24] This, of course, raises the possibility that the original identification of John Jackson as the son of Christopher Jackson was another case of intentional genealogical fraud by H.G. Somerby.

More than one John Jackson at New England.Anderson lists three different John Jacksons identified on passenger lists in 1635: one each on the Elizabeth and Ann, Defence, and the Blessing. Also listed are John Jackson arriving in Ipswich in 1635 with no ship identified; another John Jackson arriving in Boston in 1637; and another John Jackson from London (but not fully documented) who arrived in 1639 and first resided in Cambridge.[25]

Origins

https://www.werelate.org/wiki/Person:Edward_Jackson_%288%29

We know from Middlesex deeds that Cambridge Village called Edward Jackson and John Jackson "brothers" when they assigned Edward 40 acres next to John. We also have the baptisms for eight of Edward's children in the same place. Furthermore he and his supposed father were both called nail makers in England, and he was called a nail maker in Cambridge Village. Perhaps the correct baptism records will be found or perhaps it is lost to time.

Disputed wife

Margaret Taft, daughter of Nicholas and Margaret Taft, was born 18 Mar 1618 and her baptism on 25 Mar 1617 recorded at Saint Dunstan's Church, in Stepney, London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The gravestone of Margaret, wife of John Jackson, who settled in Newton, indicates she was born circa 1624, clearly contrasting with the date of birth for Margaret Taft (18 Mar 1618).

Margaret Taft was married at London on 24 May 1643 to John Jackson. Source: London, England, Extracted Church of England Parish Records, 24 May 1643, Jackson, John & Taft, Margt, Book 24 Collection London: - Calendar of Marriage Licence Allegations, 1597-1648. It has not been proven, however, that this same-named couple is identical with the couple who settled in the village of Newton in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Immigration

There were three John Jackson's that arrived in 1635 (on the Elizabeth and Ann, on the Defence, and on the Blessing). None of those three are likely this guy. There are no records of this John Jackson before 1639, and it is likely he arrived late 1638 or early 1639 when Certificates of Conformity (what we use to construct passenger lists) were no longer required.

Biography

He was the first settler of Cambridge Village who removed thither and died in the place. He brought a good estate with him from England. He took the freeman oath in 1641. He was one of the first deacons of the church, and gave an acre of land for the church and cemetery, in the centre of which the first meeting-house was erected in 1660. This acre constitutes the oldest part of the old cemetery on Centre Street. He labored long and earnestly, by petitioning the General Court and otherwise, to have Cambridge Village erected into an independent town; but he did not live to see the object accomplished. He died January 30, 1674-5, aged about 73 years. His widow, Margaret, died August 28, 1684, aged 60. His son, Edward, was slain by the Indians at Medfield,, in their attack upon and burning of that town, Feb. 21, 1676. His house was near the place where Mr. Smallwood's shop afterwards stood. The cellar yet remains, and the pear trees now standing there, ar supposed to have been planted by him. Abraham was the only one among his sons who reared a family.

From the History of Newton, Page 142

Jackson, Deacon John (d. 1675), the first settler of Cambriddge Village, who remained and died in it. In 1639, he bought of Miles Ives, of Watertown, a dwelling-house and eighteen acres of land, situated on the Roxbury road, very near the line which now divides Newton from Brighton. It was he who gave an acre of land for the first meeting-house and burial place, now the oldest part of the old cemetery on Centre Street. His old mansion house, which was pulled down about 1800, stood on the spot afterwards occupied by the dwelling-house of Edwin Smallwood. The old pear trees on the estate are supposed to have been planted by his son Abraham, who added an acre to the acre given by his father for the meeting-house and burial place. He left eight hundred and sixty-three acres of land.

Deacon Jackson's Headstone no longer exists at the burying ground.

THIS IS THE MONUMENT TO THE FIRST SETTLERS OF CAMBRIDGE VILLAGE, NOW KNOWN AT NEWTON, MA.
