The Rev. Stephen Goffe, the puritanical minister of Stanmer, Sussex, was educated at Magdalen Coll. Oxford, B.A. 1595, M.A. 1599, Fellow 1598, was Recror of Bramber 1603, and of St. Botolph 1605, but deprived 1607. By Deborah, his wife, who d. 8 Nov. 1626, he had issue,

  • 1. Stephen (Rev.), educated at Merton Coll. Oxford, B.A. 16.4, MA 1627 D.D. 1636, Chaplain to Chaeles I. 1636, Rector of Hurstmonceaux, Sussex, 1639, and Canon of Chichester 1641, became a Roman Catholic and. an Oratjrian Monk in Pans 25 Dec. 1681.
  • 2. John (Rev.), educated at Merton Coll. Oxford, B.A. 1628, M.A. 1631, D.D. 1660, Rector of Rype 1629-45, and Vicar of Hacklngtoa 1642-5, Imprisoned for delinquency 1645, and Rector or Norton, Kent 1852-61, d.s.p., bur. 26 Nov. 1661. fW.

The 3rd son, William Goffe, Lieutenant Gen. in the Parliamentary Army, and one of Cromwell's Lords 1657, MP. for Yarmouth 1654-5, and Hants 1655-9, was one of the Judges at the trial of Charles II and signed the death warrant. He m. Frances, dau. of E. Whalley, a parliamentary general and cousin of Oliver Cromwell, and d. at Newhaven, Connecticut 1680, having had Issue, ...

William Goffe had four brothers:

  • 1.Stephen Goffe (1605-1681) No known issue.
  • 2.John Goffe (1610 -1661) who had a son, John, baptized 1643, so could not be our John Goffe, unless the dates are wrong;his subsequent history is not known as yet.
  • 3.James Goffe (b? d?,) leatherseller who had a son, James, who died in England ca 1673.
  • 4.Timothie Goffe (b 1626) History unknown except that he became a ship's chandler. He would have been 23 in 1649, the year of our John's birth.
