About Domangart mac Fergus, Rí na Dál Riata

Alert – Arguments can be made for the historicity of Domangart, but his supposed father, Fergus, is legendary. His profile can be accessed by clicking here.

Wikipedia also has a webpage for Fergus Mór mac Eirc. It confirms, "While his historicity may be debatable, his posthumous importance as the founder of Scotland in the national myth of Medieval and Renaissance Scotland is not in doubt. Rulers of Scotland from Cináed mac Ailpín until the present time claim descent from Fergus Mór." (Ken Shelley, July 2022)

enWikipedia (last edited May 2022) Domangart Réti
Domangart Réti was king of Dál Riata in the early 6th century, following the death of his father, Fergus Mór.

He had at least two sons: Comgall and Gabrán, both of whom became kings in succession. The Tripartite Life of St. Patrick states that he was present at the death of the saint, c. 493. Domangart died around 507 and was succeeded by Comgall.

His byname, Réti, appears in Adomnán's Life of Saint Columba, in the form Corcu Réti, perhaps a synonym for Dál Riata. Corcu, a Primitive Irish language term for a kin group, usually combined with the name of a divine or mythical ancestor, is apparently similar to the term Dál. Alternatively, rather than representing an alternative name for all of Dál Riata, it has been suggested Corcu Réti was the name given to the kin group which later divided to form the Cenél nGabráin of Kintyre and the Cenél Comgaill of Cowal, thus excluding the Cenél nÓengusa of Islay and the Cenél Loairn of middle and northern Argyll.

Notes for Domangart I Of Argyll King Of Dalriada

Weis' "Ancestral Roots. . ." (170:3).

The following is taken from an Internet posting of Michael R. Davidson of Edinburgh. Scotland, on 23 Oct 1995:

Domangart mac Fergus

Domangart succeeded to the kingship upon his father's death in 501. The _Senchus_ and other sources note that Feidelm Fotchain bore Domangart two sons. According to the genealogies, Feidelm was the daughter of Brian mac Eochaid Mugmedon, the ancestor of the kings of Airgialla, in the northern part of Ireland. Annals make no mention of Domangart excepting his death in 507, and he was succeeded by his son Comgall. Children:

1. Comgall died in 538, and was succeeded by his brother Gabran. 2. *Gabran.

O'Hart inserts a generation between DOMANGART and GABHRAN - Eochaidh (d.535).

King of Dál Riata (aka Dalriada or Dalriata) - parts of Northern Ireland and Scotland. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dál_Riata -SPF

Domangart the First of Dalriada, also known as Domangart mac Fergus, was the King of Dalriada from about 501-507, following his father's death. Domangart married Feldem Foltchain, daughter of Brion, son of Eochaid Mugmedon. Brion was an older half -brother of the famous Niall of the Nine Hostages. This marriage is in good agreement with the revised chronology of Carney" Studies in Irish Literature and History" for the fifth century, which puts the death of Niall at about 542.

King of Dál Riata, early sixth century.

Domangart is given a reign of 5 years by both the Duan Albanach [Duan Albanach 131] and the king lists [Poppleton MS, Lists "D", ,"F", "I", "K", KKES, 253, 264, 270, 281, 286], a reign length which agrees with the annals (which, however, are probably not contemporary for this period, and quite possibly also not independent of the king lists). For the epithet of mac Nisse (see below), see the page of his father Fergus, who is given the same epithet.

"Ancestral Roots of Sixty New England Colonists" {Frederick L. Weis, Lancaster, Mass., 1950, p. 132} - Domangart ruled Dalrieda, now part of Scotland, 499-504.
