STARR

The first known Starr family in America was Doctor Comfort Starr. He arrived in America on the ship called the Hercules of Sandwich. He settled in New Towne, shortly called Cambridge. As a Puritan, or so it appears, he sought to bring about reforms within the Church of England, but three years later joined the Separatist or Pilgrims and became a neighbor of Captain Miles Standish and William Alden at Duxbury. In 1642 he was a Deputy from Duxbury to the General Court, as the quaint record recites, "to guide forces against the Indians for an offensive and defensive War."

After some years the doctor settled in Boston. One of his sons Thomas followed the profession of his father and was living in Yarmouth, Massachusetts from 1648-1670. His wife was named Rachel. His son Samuel married Hannah Brewster. He was appointed County Marshall in 1678. Samuel and Rachel's son Jonathan married Elizabeth Morgan. Their daughter Hannah married John Mills. Their son Corporal Edward Mills married Hannah Avery. Their son Edward married Locina Stewart. Their daughter Mary Locina Mills married Nathan Wright. Their daughter Laura Caroline Wright married Gamaliel Taylor. Their son Byron Orlando Taylor married Carrie Eugenia Thomas. Their daughter Florence Jewell Taylor married Harold James Currier. Their son James William Currier married Evelyn Wilkerson. Their daughter Caren Ruth Currier married David Bruce Telford.

Among the passengers aboard the Hercules, which sailed from Sandwich, Kent, England, for New England in the early spring of 1634/5, were "Comfort Starre of Ashford in Kent Chirurgeon," three of his children, Thomas, Comfort, and Mary; two men servants, Samuel Dunkin and John Turvey (or Turbey), and one maid servant, Truth-Shall-Prevail Starre -- Veritas! At Ashford, Dr. Comfort Starr had been a leading citizen, a warden of beautiful St. Mary's Church, and a man of means, even to the point of being recorded as a lender of money. His Ashford real estate he never sold, but it descended to his son, Comfort, and to his grandsons Josiah, John, and George Starr.

They immigrated in 1635 To Cambridge, MA on the ship "Hercules." In 1638 they were residing in Duxbury, MA.

"Comfort Starre of Ashford in Kent Chirurgeon [surgeon]" appears on a passenger list in Yearbooks C and D of Sandwich, Kent County, England, 1608-1642. He and his family along with three servants sailed on the 200 ton Hercules of Sandwich in the spring of 1634. Only three children are listed: Thomas, Comfort, and Mary. The servants were: Saml Duncan, John Turvey or Turbey, and Truth shall prevail Starre. In order to obtain passage, Dr. Starr presented a certificate of his "conversacion and Conformity to the orders and discipline of the Church" signed by Edmund Hayes, Vicar of Asford, 21 March 1634 and another signed by John Honnywood and Thomas Godfrey, Justices.

Mr. Comfort, chirurgion, of Ashford, Eng., came in the Hercules in March, 1634, with 3 children and 3 servants. Settled at Cambridge; propr. 1635; rem. to Duxbury; had land grant 7 Aug. 1638; frm. 4 June, 1639; his servant William Godden in court 3 Aug. 1640.

His sister Constant, memb. chh. Dorchester before 1639, m. John Morley. He was remembered in the will of his bro. Jehoshaphat Starr of Ashford, Feb. 2, 1659. Rem. to Boston. Wife -- d. June 25, 1658, ae. 63.

There are numerous notes in early America regarding Thomas Starr. The Will of Thomas Gilbert in 1871 notes his daughter Elizabeth is married to Thomas Starr. This court action was also noted: October 29, 1669 (CM, PCR 5:27): Thomas Starr, for vseing words and carriages tending very much to vncleanes, was fined twenty shillings.

Dr. Comfort Starr brought his family from Kent, England, to New Towne (now Cambridge), where he reestablished his surgery practice in 1635. According to family history, Dr. Starr's house became the home of Nathaniel Eaton and served in 1639 as the site where Harvard College instruction began.

The Rev. Comfort Starr, one of Dr. Comfort Starr's nine children, was the first family member to graduate from the College (in 1647), and is one of five Fellows named in the Harvard College Charter of 1650, the document that officially incorporated the school.

Comfort13 Starr (Thomas14) was born in Scituate, Plymouth, Ma 15 Nov 1644. Comfort died 18 Oct 1693 in Middletown, Hartford, Ct, at 48 years of age.

Elizabeth died 25 Jun 1658 in Boston, Suffolk, Ma, at 62 years of age. He married Marah (Martha, Mary) Weld in Boston, Suffolk, Ma, 4 Jul 1666.

1370 vi. John Starr was born in Ashford, Kent, England 25 Oct 1626. John died 30 Oct 1711 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, at 85 years of age. He married Martha (Mary) Bunker.
1371 vii. Samuel Starr was born in Ashford, Kent, England 1 Mar 1628. Samuel died 16 Apr 1633 in Ashford, Kent, England, at 5 years of age. His body was interred 16 Apr 1633.
1372 viii. Hanna(H) Starr was born in Ashford, Kent, England 22 Jul 1632. Hanna(H) died 19 Nov 1674 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, at 42 years of age. She married John Cutt 30 Jul 1662.
1373 ix. Ruth Starr was born in Newtone (cambrid, Middlesex, Ma about 1634. Ruth died 3 Sep 1658 in Massachusetts, at 24 years of age. She married Joseph Moore in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, 21 May 1656.
1374 x. Liddia Starr was born in Ashford, Kent, England 22 Mar 1634/1635. Liddia died 10 Jun 1653 in Massachusetts, at 18 years of age. She married Simon Eire.
Starr, Comfort, was a physician, and the first of the name in New England. He married Elizabeth ---. He came from Ashford, in the county of Kent, in England, and settled at Cambridge, Mass. in 1633. He died at Boston, Jan. 1660--his wife died in 1658. Children, Doct. Thomas, John, Comfort, Elizabeth, Hannah and Maynard.

Comfort was b. in 1644, and Elizabeth in 1646; but rem. again to Yarmouth, where he had former. been, for he was there fin. with others, as a scoffer at religion [Felt, Eccles, Hist. I. 496], and there had Benjamin, 6 Feb. 1648; and Jehosaphat, 12 Jan. 1650. By his profess. it was diffic. to live in so sm. towns, and he rem. to Charlestown, there was clk. of the writs 1654, in wh. yr. his d. Constant d. and William was b. wh. d. 13 Dec. 1657; Josiah had been 1 Sept. bef. that, by w. Rachel, as the rec. of C. tells; and he was a householder, with small income, 1658, and d. in this yr. 26 Oct. leav. w. Rachel. Neither he nor his w. was mem of the ch. Winsor says right. that he d. bef. his f. while Thacher, whose Med. Biog. had many similar erros, extends his life to 1670. Gr. of 400 acres to his desolate wid. and eight small ch. will be found in Vol. IV. pt. I. p. 355 of our Col. Rec. - Savage

Thomas married Rachel Harris 6, daughter of Thomas Harris and Elizabeth Williams, about 1639 in Chatham, RI. (Rachel Harris was born about 1620.)
