About Dr. James Tilby
Dr. James Tilby was born in the Patterson Township in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, United States in c. 1828. He was the son of John Tilby and Elizabeth Tilby (née Wilkins) who were both from London, but had emigrated to the United States and made their home in Patterson. At some stage James emigrated to England as James and Jane Follows married at the St Pancras Old Church in London on 24 August 1849. They had two children in England, a baby who was born and died in 1850 and daughter Elizabeth born in 1852. Daughter Adelaide was born at sea in 1852 as the family emigrated to Australia, before they moved to Nelson in New Zealand where son William was born in 1856 followed by son John in 1860. In his capacity as a doctor James is mentioned often in the newspapers of the time and by 1888 the family were living at Pukekohe in Auckland. Jane died on 27 July 1899 and is buried in the Pukekohe Cemetery. James died in Epsom on 8 September 1908 and is buried in the Waikumete Cemetery. It is believed that this memorial stone to James was added to the Pukekohe Cemetery by the people of Pukekohe in appreciation for all his work in the community.
