EBLES [IV] de Grandson, son of EBLES [III] Seigneur de Grandson & his wife Jordane --- (-[26 Jan] after 1235, bur [Joux]). His parentage is confirmed by the 1233 charter quoted below names his mother “Jordane”. His date of death indicates that Ebles [IV] was a different person from Ebles [III], who was already old enough in [1158/60] to make donations in his own name as noted above. Seigneur de Grandson. A charter dated 1184 (vidimus dated 1285, in the same document as the copy of a charter dated 21 Jan 1142) records donations to Théla [Montheron], including the one made by “Petrus de Gumuens qui dicitur de Turre miles” witnessed by “Yblo de Granzon...”[1206]. Emperor Friedrich I granted rights in the valley of Le Lac-de-Joux to “Ebali de Sarrata domini Grandisoni fundatoris dictæ Abbatiæ de Lacu” and any successors who held “castrum et villam Sarratæ” by charter dated 26 Aug 1186[1207]. “Yblo dominus de Grancionis” donated serfs to Romainmotier, after “Hugo filius meus” entered as a monk, with the consent of “uxor mea et filii mei Yblo, Girardus, Henricus, Willelmus, Otto, Petrus et ceteri omnes”, by charter dated 1200[1208]. “Ebalus dominus Grandissoni” restored property “aput Sanctum Desiderium”, previously held by “Uldricus de Sarrata...et pater eius” and donated by “felicis recordationis Jordana mater mea”, to Romainmotier, with the consent “ab uxore filii mei Girardi domini Sarrete...et...dicto G filio meo”, by charter dated 28 Sep 1233, sealed by “ego Ebalus dominus Grandissoni et ego Antonia domina Sarrete”[1209]. “Ebalus dominus Grandissoni” donated property to Lac-de-Joux abbey, for the anniversaries of “mee et uxoris mee Beatricis ac liberorum et antecessorum meorum”, and for the future burials of the donor and his wife, with the consent of “filiorum meorum...Henrici domini de Chanuenz et Petri domini Grandissoni et...Anthonie domine Sarrate condam uxoris Gyrardi filii mei et liberorum suorum Aymonis, Willermi et Jordane”, by charter dated 1235[1210]. [The necrology of Lausanne records the death 26 Jan of “Ybliodus dns Grandissoni” and his donation “ad mensuram Sarrate in decima de Ornye”[1211]. It is not known which Ebles de Grandson this entry refers.]

Ebles’s wife was mentioned, but not named, in his 1200 charter which also names the couple’s six children (and refers to but does not name others). Assuming this wife was Beatrix, it is unlikely therefore that she was married later than [1185/90]. “Ebalus dominus Grandissoni” donated property to Lac-de-Joux abbey, for the anniversaries of “mee et uxoris mee Beatricis ac liberorum et antecessorum meorum”, and for the future burials of the donor and his wife, with the consent of “filiorum meorum...Henrici domini de Chanuenz et Petri domini Grandissoni et...Anthonie domine Sarrate condam uxoris Gyrardi filii mei et liberorum suorum Aymonis, Willermi et Jordane”, by charter dated 1235[1212]. There is no guarantee that Ebles’s wife Beatrix was the same person as his unnamed wife referred to in his 1200 charter. Charrière suggests that she was Beatrix de Genève, daughter of Humbert Comte de Genève & his wife ---[1213]. He states that the testament of Guillaume [II] Comte de Genève, dated 9 Nov 1252, names her son Aimon Bishop of Geneva as “consanguineus”, but this reference is not in the text of the version of this document which has been consulted[1214]. From a chronological point of view, the suggestion seems dubious considering the likely marriage date of Ebles [IV] and considering the birth date of Humbert de Genève in [1150/60?]. Another possibility to explain the Grandson/Genève consanguinity is presumably that Ebles’s wife was the daughter of Amédée [I] Comte de Genève by his second marriage.
