J., July 12 1703, daughter of Joseph and Rose (Allen) Holley of Sandwich. Her mother Rose (Allen) Holley, married second May 19, 1648, William Newlands, a Quaker. Nathan Fitz Randolph married second, at the Haddonfield Meeting, Haddonfield, N. J., Apr. 12 1706, as her third husband, JANE (CURTIS-OGBORNE) HAMPTON, born at Bugbrooke, co. Northampton, England, 11th of 2nd month (April), 1661 [111], and died in Buckingham Township, Bucks Co., Pa. [13] in 1731. She was the daughter of Thomas and Jane Curtis, and widow of Samuel Ogborne and John Hampton, whose executrix she was Dec. 8, 1694. As the widow of Nathaniel Fitz Randolph she married as her fourth husband, John Sharp of Burlington, N. J. Her own will, as Jane Sharp, of Buckingham Township, Bucks Co., Pa., was dated 8th of 6 mo. (Aug.) 1729, and was proved Nov. 13, 1731, and mentions her sons Samuel Ogborne, Joseph Hampton, Benjamin Fitzrandall, and daughters Mary, wife of Jonas Kemble, and Sarah, wife of Edmond Kinsey. The executor was her son-in-law Edmond Kinsey.
  • Nathaniel Fitz Randolph was one of the four who first asked for religious tolerance for the Friends in New England. In 1677 he, having joined the Quakers years before, and had in consequence suffered much persecution from the Plymouth Government, exchanged his house in Barnstable for land in Woodbridge, N. J. and in the years afterwards, 1678-9, moved with his family to New Jersey. He served as associate justice of Middlesex County, N. J., in 1688, 1692 and 1698; and in 1693-5 he represented Woodbridge in the Provisional Assembly. In 1683, on the death of James Bollen, first Secretary of the Province, he was one of the two guardians of his children, and, on the etablishment of the Woodbridge Monthly Meeting of Friends in 1706, he became a prominent member of the Society, and for seven years the Meeting was held in his house, until the completion of the Meeting House in 1713, two months before his death.

• This name is not of Norman-French origin, as might be inferred from the prefix, Fitz, meaning son of, but rather, is of Anglo-Saxon derivation. Under the form Randulf it is found, as an undertenent, in the Domesday Book. I do not find it in the Battle Abbey lists.
• Attempts have been made to connect the American line with the Lords of Middleham and the Dukes of Westmorland (FitzRandolph Traditions) and to find the origin of the line in a certain "Count Herald FitzRandolph, who is mentioned in the Domesday Book as among the nobles who accompanied William the Conqueror from Normandy to England." These may well be the facts, but I have not been able to find the slightest ground for their assertion. At any rate the name is an ancient and honorable one, both in England and America.
• EDWARD FITZRANDOLPH (1), born about 1615, came to New England about 1630, with his mother, a widow. There appears no other information concerning him until May 10, 1637, when, at Scituate, he was married, by the Reverend John Lothrop, to Elizabeth Blossom, joining the church four days later, a step that Elizabeth did not take until 1643. Elizabeth Blossom was a daughter of Deacon Thomas Blossom, from Schooby, England, and was born at Leyden about 1620. Edward removed from Scituate to Barnstable, and then, after many years, to Piscataway, New Jersey, in 1675, dying the following year. His widow subsequently became the second wife of Captain John Pike, of Woodbridge, and died, 1712, in her 93rd year. To Edward and Elizabeth FitzRandolph were born eleven children: Nathaniel (2); Hannah (3); Mary (4); John (5); Joseph (6); Elizabeth (7), who married Andrew Wooden; Thomas (8); Hope (9); and, Benjamin (10). There were two other children, who died in infancy. Some of the married daughters did not come to New Jersey.
• NATHANIEL FITZRANDOLPH (2), son of Edward (1), is said to have been three times married. The present writer has been able to find record of but two marriages, that of 1662, to Mary Holly, or Holloway, of Barnstable, who died 7-12-1703, and that to Mrs. Jane (Curtis) Hampton, of Shrewsbury. She had been married twice before, to Samuel Osborne and John Hampton, and took as a fourth husband, John Sharp. Nathaniel FitzRandolph was a Quaker. He was born in August of 1640 or 1642, at Barnstable, and died at Woodbridge 9-21, 1713. His children were: John Christopher (11); Isaac (12); Nathaniel (13); Samuel (14); Joseph (15); Edward (16); Martha (17); and Benjamin (18).
• JOHN FITZRANDOLPH (5), son of Edward (1), died in 1727. He had married, Octy. 1681, Sarah Bonham. Their children were: Sarah (19); Elizabeth (20); Temperance (21); John (22); and, Edward (23).
• JOSEPH FITZRANDOLPH (6), son of Edward (1), was born March 1, 1656, and died at Piscataway in 1726. He married, 1-16-1687, Hannah Conger, who was born 1670. Their children were: Joseph (24); Jonathan (25); Moses (26); Hannah (27), who married Captain Andrew Drake; Mary (28), who married John Morris; Bethia (29), who married John Clarkson; Ann (30); Prudence (31); Isaac (32); Lydia (33); Susannah (34); and, Ruth (35).
• THOMAS FITZRANDOLPH (8), son of Edward (1), was born August 16, 1659, and died in 1745. He was of Piscataway. He married, Nov. 23, 1686, Elizabeth Manning, died Mch. 1, 1732, one of whose brothers married, if believe, Grace (72), daughter of Joseph FitzRandolph (24). Their children were: David (36); Jonathan (37); Dinah (38), who married a Dunham; and, Lusanna (or Susanna) (39), who married a Whitehead.
• BENJAMIN FITZRANDOLPH (10), son of Edward (1), was born at Barnstable in 1663 and died near Princeton in 1731. He married, July 1689, Sarah Dennis, of New Brunswick. Died at Piscataway, New Jersey about 1684/85. He married May 10, 1637 to Elizabeth Blossom, who was born in 1620 in Leyden, Holland. She married a second time, June 30, 1685 to Capt John Pike. Died in Woodbridge or Piscataway, New Jersey in 1713.

The following article is taken from the "Genealogical Notes of Barnstable Families", pages 368 and 369.

Mr Lathrop says, "The young Master Fitzrandolphe" built in 1636, the 38th house constructed in Scituate. Having provided himself with a home be married, May 10, 1637, Elizabeth, daughter of Deacon Thomas Blossom of the Leyden and Plymouth churches. He joined Mr Lathrop's church in Scituate May 14, 1637, and his wife joined at Barnstable August 27, 1643. He sold his house in that town to Deacon Richard Sealis, and removed in the spring of 1639 to Barnstable, and built a house on his lot containing eight acres, bounded east by the road to Hyanis. In 1649, Edward Fitzrandolphe removed to his farm in West Barnstable, "a double great lot", containing 120 acres of upland, bounded north by the meadows, east by the Bursley farm, south by the commons, and west by the lands of Mr Thomas Dexter. In 1669 he and several families from the Cape removed to New Jersey. In October 1683 his widow was living in New Piscataqua, New Jersey. He is called in "deeds" a yeoman, or farmer, and does not appear to have been employed in any official station. He had received a good education for those times, and as Mr Lathrop styles him "Master" he probably belonged to a good family. He came probably from the west of England.

EDWARD FITZ RANDOLPH, bapt. July 5, 1607, Sutton-in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, England. The son of EDWARD FITZ RANDOLPH and FRANCES HOWES. Died between 1675 and 1676. Buried at St. James churchyard (now Stelton or Edison) Middlesex Co., New Jersey. The tombstone thought to have been destroyed when the British threw up breastworks for encampment. Married ELIZABETH BLOSSOM, born 1620, Leyden Holland. Daughter of "ELDER" THOMAS BLOSSOM and ANN HEILSON. Died 1713, Woodbridge or Piscataway, New Jersey, buried next to Edward in the west corner of St. James churchyard, Piscataway.

The passenger record entry in "The Great Emigration" of 1630 of the Winthrop Fleet lists "Edward Fitz Randolph of Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts, Scituate". This gives Edward's former home and his destination in the New World. Edward is said to have built the 39th house in Scituate, Plymouth Colony in 1636. On the 10th of May 1637 he married ELIZABETH BLOSSOM. He is called in deeds a yeoman or farmer and does not appear to have held any public office. Pastor Lothrop styles him "Master"; he probably belongs to a good family. He moved to Barnstable on Cape Cod in 1639. was juryman 1641; his name appears in the list of those able to bear arms in New Plymouth 1643; sold his house on June 1, 1649 and moved to West Barnstable; moved his family in 1669 to Piscataway New Jersey, because the New England patriotism and religion were too restrictive.

He was bequeathed 10 Pounds Sterling in his father's will, 1647, "if he cum to demand it".

1630 - Passenger Record of "The Great Emigration" of the Winthrop Fleet lists "Edward Fitz Randolph of Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts, Scituate" (former home and destination).

Edward Fitz Randolph, progenitor of the Fitz Randolph family in America, came to Plymouth among 700 passengers in one of the eleven vessels which comprised the "Winthrop Fleet", and which was known as the "Great Immigration" of 1630. He and Elizabeth were married by Rev. John Lathrop; they lived for a time at Scituate, later moving to Barnstable, Massachusetts. Their 9 children married and established families in Plymouth Colony. The Fitz Randolphs did not agree wholeheartedly with the puritanical, morally rigorous, and strict beliefs in vogue among many people of the Plymouth Colony. Minor infractions of these beliefs, or in some cases an expressed opposite opinion, often brought severe penalties and physical punishment.

The Fitz Randolph family of Massachusetts and New Jersey should be clearly differentiated from the Randolph family of Virginia, since they belong to the different branches of the family which came to England with William the Conqueror from Normandy in 1066.

1636 - He built the 38th house constructed in Scituate, Plymouth Colony (according to Rev. John Lathrop).

14 May 1637 - United with a non-conformist religious society formed by Rev. John Lathrop, who was driven from England with a company of his parishoners.

Spring of 1639 - After selling his house to Deacon Richard Sealis he removed from Scituate to Barnstable, Plymouth Colony, on Cape Cod; built a house on his lot containing 8 acres.

1641 - Juryman.

1643 - His name appears in the list of those able to bear arms in New Plymouth.

27 Aug 1643 - Elizabeth joined Rev. John Lathrop's religious society.

01 June 1649 - Added to his farm a great double lot containing 120 acres of upland. (Sold his house and moved to West Barnstable.)

1669 - He and several families from the Cape (Massachusetts) moved to Piscataway (Stalton or Edison) East New Jersey, because of restrictive New England patriotism and religion. Settled 2 miles from New Brunswick, near Randolphsville NJ.

In deeds, Edward is called a "yeoman" (farmer). Did not appear to have been employed in any official station. He had received a good education for those times, and as Mr. Lothrop styles him "Master FitzRandolph", he probably belonged to a good family.

He died at nearly age 80 shortly after moving to New Jersey, and was buried in the west corner of the St. James Churchyard, Piscataway (Stalton or Edison), Middlesex, NJ. His tombstone was destroyed when the British troops came down King George's Highway (Woodbridge Avenue) and threw up earth breastworks over his and other graves; after the war was over, the ground was leveled. Some tombstones of Thomas' family are partly buried, some are readable, some are so chipped off by frost that the lettering is all gone. No trace was found of the tombstones of either Edward or Elizabeth.

EDWARD FITZ RANDOLPH, bap. July 5, 1607, Sutton-in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, England. The son of EDWARD FITZ RANDOLPH and FRANCES HOWES. Died between 1675 and 1676. Buried at St. James churchyard (now Stelton or Edison) Middlesex Co., New Jersey. The tombstone thought to have been destroyed when the British threw up breastworks for encampment. Married ELIZABETH BLOSSOM, born 1620, Leyden Holland. Daughter of "ELDER" THOMAS BLOSSOM and ANN HEILSON. Died 1713, Woodbridge or Piscataway, New Jersey, buried next to Edward in the west corner of St. James churchyard, Piscataway.

The passenger record entry in "The Great Emigration" of 1630 of the Winthrop Fleet lists "Edward Fitz Randolph of Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts, Scituate". This gives Edward's former home and his destination in the New World. Edward is said to have built the 39th house in Scituate, Plymouth Colony in 1636. On the 10th of May 1637 he married ELIZABETH BLOSSOM. He is called in deeds a yeoman or farmer and does not apper to have held any public office. Pastor Lothrop styles him "Master"; he propably belongs to a good family. He moved to Barnstable on Cape Cod in 1639. was juryman 1641; his name appears in the list of those able to bear arms in New Plymouth 1643; sold his house on June 1, 1649 and moved to West Barnstable; moved his family in 1669 to Piscataway New Jersey, because the New England patriotism and religion were too restrictive.

This descent is based on the one in RD600. The problem with this descent is identifying Alice de Ros as a daughter of Sir William de Ros of Ingmanthorpe and Eustace FitzHugh. Douglas Richardson in his Magna Carta Ancestry p.119 states William and Eustache had five daughters, but none were named Alice.

Edward Fitz Randolph – My Emigrant Ancestor

Edward Fitz Randolph was baptized July 5, 1607 in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, England. (A copy of a parish record showing Edward Fitzrandolph’s baptism at the church of St Mary Magdalene in Sutton in Ashfield in July 1607 is still held in the town’s library with the original at the Nottinghamshire county archive.) Edward died between 1675 and 1676 and was buried in the St. James churchyard (now Stelton or Edison), Middlesex County, New Jersey. His tombstone is thought to have been destroyed when the British built fortifications there.

Edward married Elizabeth Blossom who was born in 1620 in Leyden, The Netherlands and died in 1713 in Woodbridge or Piscataway, New Jersey and is buried beside Edward.

The passenger record entry in “The Great Emigration” of 1630 in the Winthrop Fleet lists “Edward Fitz Randolph of Sutton-inAshfield, Notts, Scituate” He came from Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, England and settled in Scituate, Plymouth Colony. He is said to have built the 38th house in Scituate in 1636. On May 10, 1637 he married Elizabeth Blossom, daughter of “Elder” Thomas Blossom and his wife Ann Heilson. He is called in deeds a yeoman or farmer and does not appear to have held any public office. He moved to Barnstable on Cape Cod in 1639, was juryman 1641, appears in the list of those able to bear arms in New Plymouth in 1643, sold his home in June 1649 and moved his family to West Barnstable, and finally moved his family to Piscataway, NJ in 1669 because the New England patriotism and religion were too restrictive.

• Sarah Bonham Fitz Randolph was born on February 16, 1664/65 in Barnstable, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. Her parents were Nicholas Bonham and Hannah Fuller.
• She married John Fitz Randolph on October 1, 1681 in Piscataway. John was born on October 7, 1653 in West Barnstable. He was the son of Edward Fitz Randolph and Elizabeth Blossom. The Bonham and Fitz Randolph families were close neighbors in Barnstable and John was an early member of the First Baptist Church of Piscataway.
• John was a large landowner and in 1707 was one of the original members of the Seventh Day Baptist Church.
• Their children were Sarah Fitz Randolph (1682), Francis Fitz Randolph (1682), Elizabeth Fitz Randolph (1683), Temperance Fitz Randolph (1685), Temperance Fitz Randolph (1687). John Fitz Randolph (1693), and Edward Fitz Randolph (1698).
• John died in 1685. Mayflower Families says that on June 26, 1685 the widow Elizabeth Fitz Randolph of Piscataway deeded land to her son John Fitz Randolph.
• Sarah died in 1737 in Belvedere, New Jersey. On January 16, 1738 administation of the estate of widow Sarah Fitz Randolph was granted to John Fitz Randolph.

• By far the most numerous representatives of any one family in the township were the Fitz Randolphs, who descended from a distinguished Norman line settling in England with William the Conqueror, A. D. 1066. They became owners of vast estates in Yorkshire and the adjacent county of Nottingham. From the last named shire came Edward Fitz Randolph, the ancestor of the American famity, who settled with his parents in Massachusetts about 1630, at the town of Scituate. In early manhood he married Elizabeth Blossom, of Puritan stock, and their children, born at Barnstable in the Plymouth colony, that lived to grow up and become heads of families, were Nathaniel, Hannah, Mary, John, Joseph, Elizabeth, Thomas, Hope and Benjamin.
  • Nathaniel Fitz Randolph, the oldest, born in 1642, became a Quaker, and one of the most influential of the sect. He migrated to Woodbridge township in 1678-9, locating near the Blazing Star ferry. He was the father of eight children, and a man of remarkable usefulness and importance in the commonwealth, filling all the local and county offices and prominent in the colonial government.
  • His brothers, John, Joseph, Thomas and Benjamin, just mentioned, had moved to Piscataway ten years earlier- in 1668-9 and were all of the Baptist persuasion except Benjamin. The emigration of this family to New Jersey was prompted by the severe enactments of the court of the old colonies, prohibiting the free exercise of individual consciences, compelling every person to sustain by tax the established Church worship, and imposing banishment upon any who opposed infant baptism.
  • John Fitz Randolph , the oldest of the Piscataway branch, was born in 1653, and married Sarah Bonham in 1675. He is known as a constituent member of this Church and one of the largest landholders in the township.
  • Joseph Fitz Randolph, the next oldest, born in 1656, was father of twelve children by his wife, Hannah Conger, a member of one of the Woodbridge families. None of this familiar name attained to greater usefulness in the Church and colony than their immediate descendants. To verify the statement would only require the mention of the heirs of his son, Joseph, who married Rebecca Drake; and his daughter, Hannah, who married Andrew Drake; and his son, Jonathan, whose wife was Margaret Manning; and his daughter, Prudence, who married Nathaniel Manning.
  • Thomas Fitz Randolph, the third son of the old patriarch, was born in 1659, and married Eliza Manning, having only six children. He was Clerk of the township and one of the first group of Selectmen to manage the affairs of the town, and served as deputy in the General Assembly.
  • Benjamin Fitz Randolph, the youngest, born 1663 married Sarah Dennis, and was taken in as a townsman of Piscataway in 1684. but moved to Princeton in 1696-9 with a colony of Friends whom William Penn induced to settle on a fertile plantation watered by Stony Brook, a tributary of the Millstone River.

 Edward Fitz Randolph, the Pilgrim, and the progenitor of  the Fitz Randolph family line in America, was undoubtedly the "Edward Fitzrandell", the son of Edward Fitz Randolph or Randall and his second wife Frances Howis or Howes, baptized at Sutton-in-Ashfield, Co., Nottingham, England, on July 8, 1607.  "Fitz Randolph Traditions" by the late Lewis Van Syckel Fitz Randolph gives much on the English antecedent of the family.

 Among the seven hundred passengers who came over in the eleven vessels which comprised the "Winthop Fleet" and which was know as the "Great Immigration" of 1630, was Edward Fitz Randolph, who settled in Scituate, Mass.  Pastor Lathrop's diary asserts that the "young Master Edward Fitzrandolph built the 38th house in Scituate, Mass."  He married in Scitutate, May 10, 1637, Elizabeth Blossom.

 Edward and Elizabeth moved from Scituate to Barnstable, Mass., in 1639 and his name appears in the list of those able to bear arms in New Plymouth in 1643. In 1649, Edward moved from Barnstable to his farm, "a great double lot", in Piscataway, N.J., leaving his son Nathaniel and his daughter, Mary, wife of Samuel Hinckley, in West Barnstable, and his daughter, Hannah, wife of Jasper Taylor, in Yarmouth. In the "Book of Records" of Nathaniel Fitz Randolph it states that Edward lived to be nearly eighty years of age."  It is often stated that Edward died in Piscataway in 1675 or 1676, which would make him only about 68 or 69 at his death, so it seems probable that he lived until 1684 or 1685.  After Edward's death, Elizabeth gave her four sons, John, Joseph, Thomas and Benjamin, on June 26, 1685 the land she had located in her husband's name, and on June 30, 1685 she married Capt. John Pike of Woodbridge, N.J.  Julianna Fitz Randolph Wood tells us in her "Family Sketches" that Elizabeth "was buried by her first husband" in the west corner of what is now St. James Church yard, Piscataway, N.J.  During the Revolution, as the British troops came down King George's Highway (now Woodbridge Avenue) breastworks were thrown across the plot, and after the war was over and the ground leveled, no trace was found of the tombstones of either Edward or Elizabeth.

 He moved to Barnstable on Cape Cod 1639; was juryman 1641; sold house June 1, 1649 and moved to West Barnstable; moved family 1669 to Piscataway, N.J. because the New England Patriotism and religion were too restrictive. Address: Note: Edward was said to have built the 38th house in Scituate, Plymouth Colony in 1636. He moved to West Barnstable and then in 1669 to Piscataway, NJ because New England's religion was too restrictive. He was a Quaker. His children were born in Barnstable and West Barnstable.

“He is called in deeds a yeoman, or farmer, and does not appear to have been employed in any official station,” the book reads of FitzRandolph, who is believed to have fathered four children in Barnstable. “He had received a good education for those times and … he probably belonged to a good family.”

After 30 years in Barnstable, Edward FitzRandolph and his family moved on to Piscataway, N.J., where the family became involved in politics and helped found Princeton University. A gate bearing the FitzRandolph name still stands on the Princeton campus.

Arrived in America in 1630 and was called "The Pilgrim". He married Elizabeth Blossom on May 10, 1637. Edward and Elizabeth Randolph lived in Scituate, Massachusetts until 1668 when they moved to New Jersey. Here the family lived for five generations.

In March of 1630, Edward FitzRandolph sailed with the great fleet of 11 emigrant ships assembled by John Winthrop from Groton, Suffolk out of London and landed at Naumkeag on the coast of Massachusetts on 13 Jun at what is present-day Salem.

On May 10, 1637, in Scituate, Plymouth Colony, Edward exchanged marriage vows with Miss Elizabeth Blossom, only daughter of Thomas and Ann (née Elsdon) Blossom. Their long and productive union produced a large family, among whom were: Nathaniel (born in 1640 and died at age four months); a second boy to be named Nathaniel (1642-1713) who married Mary Holloway; Mary (1650-04 Jan 1738), wife of Samuel Hinckley; Hannah (1648-1705), wife of Jasper Joseph Taylor; John (1653-1727) who married Sarah Bonham; Joseph (1656-1726) who married Joanna Conger; Elizabeth (1657-1702), wife of 1st John Langstaff, and 2nd Andrew Wooden; Hope (1661-1703), wife of Ezekial Bloomfield; and Benjamin (1663-1746), who married Miss Sarah Dennis.

In 1675 Edward and Elizabeth had enjoyed almost a half century of marriage when he died in his eighth decade in Piscataway, Colonial New Jersey. His remains were interred in the burial ground adjacent to St. James Episcopal Church, formerly known as the Piscataway-town Burial Ground and White Church Cemetery, in Edison, Middlesex County, New Jersey.

A decade later, his widow married again, becoming the bride of widower Judge John Pike, a founder of Woodbridge and father of grown children. He, too, predeceased her, dying in the third year of their marriage. He was laid to rest next to his first wife, the mother of all his children.

Elizabeth was aged 93 years when she died in 1713. She was laid to rest at the side of her beloved first husband.

Sixty-three years later, as the colonists waged a war for independence from the British, English troops used the church as a barracks and hospital, as it was strategically located on King George's Highway (present-day Woodbridge Avenue). The British threw a defensive breastwork over the burial ground which sustained major damage. After the war's end, the ground was leveled but no trace of the FitzRandolph markers were ever found. Sadly, the exact location of Edward's and Elizabeth's resting places are forever lost to mankind.

Note:
Edward came to New England in 1630 with the 700 passengers in
the Winthrop Fleet. He settled first in Scituate, MA where he
was married. The diary of Rev. Lothrop records that Edward
built the 38th house in Scituate in 1636. In the spring of
1639, they moved to Barnstable, MA as some of the first settlers
of that town. He was bequeathed ten pounds in the will of his
father in England in 1647, "if he cum to demand it". In 1649,
they moved again to a "great double lot" in West Barnstable
containing 120 acres of upland. Again in 1669, with his wife
and six of his children, he moved to Piscataway, NJ, leaving
behind his son Nathaniel and daughters, Mary and Hannah, wife of
Jasper Taylor. Elizabeth and Edward were buried in St. James
churchyard in Piscatway, where, during the Revolution,
breastworks where built to defend aginst the Brittish. After
the war, when the breastworks were dismantled, the former grave
markers could not be located.
