There is a mystery in the early Moss family that has puzzled me for years. I hope someone knows the answer.
First, the generally accepted timeline is:
- 1. Edward Moss 1610-1685 (& Ann Beltchourton)
- 2. His son Edward Moss 1637-1716 (& Eleanor Westwood)
- 3. His son Edward Moss ca 1650? -?
Now the mystery:
This is from William & Mary Quarterly, Vol 7, No. 1 pg 24 (dated 1898). It is a note attached to the Armistead family and is quoted often, including the definitive “Moss of Virginia:”
“Edward Moss, "boatwright" an early resident of York Co.,Va., made a gift to his son Edward, in 1657, to the record of which the clerk affixed a drawing appearing to indicate armorial bearings. His wife was Eleanor, who in 1665, gave a calf to her son, Edward Moss, “sonne to Edward Mosse, deceased. This son was a justice in 1687, and made his will in 1716.”
Who is the “deceased” Edward? Edward 1 and 2 are both alive in 1665.
Surely someone has questioned this before. I would REALLY appreciate it if someone could explain it!
Answer to above question
Yes! I have the answer – The Edward Moss that everyone is assuming was born around 1610 died not die in 1685. He was alive when he gave his son Edward land on May 21, 1657. He was dead by 1665 when his widow Eleanor gave the younger Edward the calf.
The book "Early Virginia Immigrants 1623-1666" by George Greer, 1912, says Edward died in June 1658. I have studied transcripts and abstracts of as many early documents as I can find, but can't verify it, but it's logical.
The question is, where did this 1685 date come from? There is no Edward who died at that time. Did someone just transpose the 5 and the 8 and all the copycats pick it up? I guess it doesn't matter... the real problem is getting it corrected!
