"There is no proof that Edward of Haverhill was the son of Edward and Susannah who sold beer in Charlestown or that he was born in England although both are possible. Edward of Haverhill was born about 1632; he deposed his age as being about 30 in several court appearances in 1662. (Essex County Quarterly Courts, Vol. 3, pp. 6 and 7). He was not a sea captain, nor apparently even a sailor. In Haverhill he lived on a leased farm and helped out as a laborer on other farms. This information in in Essex County Court Records. The "three brothers" story is a myth that shows up every now and then in genealogy. Mathias Button, his father-in-law, was a coastal trader.
He married Mary Button, bpt. 23 Feb 1633/4, Boston ( published Records of the First Church in Boston) dau. of Mathias and Letice BUTTON. (The French marriage may have come from a dau of John Button of Boston, unrelated to Matthias.) The first six children Mary, Samuel, Thomas, Elizabeth, Mehitabel and Edward) of Edward and Mary are recorded in Haverhill and the death of a daughter in April 1667 is also recorded there. This is probably Mehitabel. Other children were recorded in Stonington; There is no Henry; the microfilm of the town record shows plainly "Marie, dau of Edward" for the date given for Henry. (Stonington Births, Marriages and Deaths, Vol. 1, p. 190, microfilm, CT, State Library) Edward, jr. did not die in Plainfield. He bought property there, sold it and continued real estate transactions in Stonington and Groton, CT. All can be found in land records of these towns. His death date is unknown. There is no record of Hannah's birth but I am sure she is the dau of Edward; a niece witnessed the will of Hannah's husband, John Meatch (Meech). (New London Probate Records, FHL film.)
Samuel's wife, Mary, was probably the daughter of Susannah Chapman Ellis who was the sister of Hope Chapman of Westerly, RI. He left to his "sister Ellis of Stonington" certain property and the upbringing of his son. (I have done a long analysis of this Ellis family...)
