About Eleanor Douglas, Countess of Carrick

http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/SCOTTISH%20NOBILITY%20LATER.htm#Wil... :

ELEANOR Douglas . m firstly ALEXANDER Bruce, illegitimate son of EDWARD Bruce Earl of Carrick King of Ireland & his mistress --- (-killed in battle Halidon Hill 19 Jul 1333). Created Earl of Carrick in [1330] or soon after. m secondly JAMES Sandilands of Calder (-before 1358). m thirdly (before 1361) WILLIAM Towers of Dalry. m fourthly (before 1368) Sir DUNCAN Wallace of Sundrum. m fifthly (1376) as his second wife, Sir PATRICK Hepburn of Hales. 1402.

Continued to use her first husband's surname and the title "Countess of Carrick" through four more marriages. (After 1368, when the title of "Earl of Carrick" was formally granted to John Stewart (afterwards Robert III) and his wife Annabella, Eleanor was for all intents and purposes what we would now call a "Dowager Countess", but that form of address had not yet been devised.)
