He died after 21 April 1676, when he sustained a loss amounting to £60 in an attack on Sudbury by Indians (see 'An Accompt of Losse sustained by several Inhabitants of ye towne of Sudbury by ye Indian Enemy ye 21st Aprill 1676' in Soldiers in King Philip's War), but before his widow married John Maynard, about 1679.

Notes

eyes, Prescott. - For many years unavailing attempts have been made to learn the later history of Elias2 Keyes (Robert1) of Sudbury, and, also, the history of his son Elias,3 the latter of whom was born at Sudbury, Nov. 18, 1666. A paper in the files of the Middlesex Co. Court for the year 1690 tells the fate of one of these men, and it Is here given in full:

"Chelmsford, 29 June, 1690.

We whos names are under writen being caled by the constable of Chelmsford to give in our verdect conserning one Elias Keyes of Sudbury who was taken up dead in Merrimack river we find yt he was padeling over said river in a small canoe, the streame being strong and the wind very high: he was turned into the water & a person taking hould of him after much striving to preserve life: wear both by the provedenc of God drownded: & said Keyes was taken up about ten or eleven days after they wear drownded as witness our hands.

Corporall Edward Colbourn / Bennone More
Mr. Nathanel Howard / Joseph Wright
Eliazar Brown / Ebenezer Essetight (?)
John Sheple / Ebenzer Parkhurst
John Walker / Samuel Spaulding
Thomas Colbourn / Joseph Parham."

In the Middlesex Probate Records, Case 17132, is the guardianship of one Deliverance Wedge, or Wadge, of Marlborough. A paper of this case, dated Oct. 19, 1713, has the name "Elyas Keys" appended as a witness. The contemporaneous recorder saw fit to enter the name in his copy as "Eliphaz" Keyes. No Eliphaz is known in the Keyes family, and although the witness signed with his "mark," it is a preferred theory that the other parties to the document knew his name better than did the recorder, especially as the name seems to have been written by Samuel Goodenow, the other witness. Here, then, we see that one Elias was drowned In 1690, and that, unless the evidence is misleading, the other was living in 1713. As Elias, Jr., has never been found in land records, nor as husband or father, it seems probable that it was he who perished in the Merrimack river. (The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. LXI)

Notes RE the above NEHGR article:

This Elias certainly is not the one who drowned in 1690. His widow had by that time been married to John Maynard for at least ten years, their daughter Sarah having been born 15 May 1680.

It is probable that the man who drowned was Elias, Jr., who would have been 23 years old at the time, as nothing further is found of him. The court record as given is verbatim and provides no further information, unfortunately.

The Elias who witnessed the 1713 document may have been son of James and Hannah (Divoll) Keyes, b. 18 September 1694, who would have then been 19 years old.
