About Elias Wilson, Sr.

Note from Curator Pam Wilson:

“My father, who is a presumed direct descendant of Elias Wilson, has done extensive yDNA testing. If you are a direct male descendant, please contact me so we can compare Wilson DNA results.”

Elias Wilson was the vicinity of Halifax in West Yorkshire, England, and was listed in documents in Elland as "Elias Wilson, Yeoman," until 1658 (see below). He appears to be a brother to a Henry Wilson, who also emigrates to Old Rappahannock County, Virginia in the 1660s.

Elland in West Yorkshire is a town along the River Calder, south of Halifax and west of Dewsbury and Wakefield; between Manchester and Leeds. Elland was called Elant in the Domesday Book, and it became the center of a textile and wool industry. According to Wikipedia, "Elland retained continuity of tenure from before the Norman Conquest into the Middle Ages, as the Elland family were descended from Anglo-Saxon thegns. The Manor of Elland, with Greetland and Southowram formed an island of the Honour of Pontefract in the surrounding Manor of Wakefield. At the request of John de Warenne, 7th Earl of Surrey, Edward II granted a charter to John de Eland, for a free market on Tuesday at his Manor of Elland, and two fairs....The remains of the medieval stocks can be found at the junction of Southgate and Elizabeth Street. "

Based upon records in the Elland parish register for baptisms, etc., there are several Wilson families in Elland (or one large family with many branches). It appears that 3-5 Wilson children were baptized each year in Elland during this time. However, I could not find a baptismal record there for Elias Wilson or Willson. The only baptism record for an Elias in Yorkshire was at St. John the Baptist Parish (Halifax Minster) in Halifax, which is several miles away.

Name: Elias Wilson

  • Event Type: Baptism
  • Baptism Date: 20 Nov 1631
  • Baptism Place: Halifax, St John the Baptist, Yorkshire, England
  • Parish as it appears: Halifax, St John the Baptist (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halifax_Minster)
  • Father: John Wilson [Johis or Johannis]

An annotation in his baptismal listing marked "South" may refer to Southowram.

Elias is noted several times as a yeoman and is involved in a number of land transactions with partners. This places him and his family in a social class below the gentry but above the peasants--a sort of a middle class at that time (though not called middle class). He was probably literate enough to transact business and was perhaps a small entrepreneur. Many of this class were weavers or tanners, etc. We know that Elland (his town) was the center of a textile and wool industry.

The most likely candidate to be an older brother Henry would be this one:

Name: Henricus Wilson

  • Baptism Date: 21 Jul 1622
  • Baptism Place: Elland, York, England--St. Mary's
  • Father: Johis Wilson

Records from West Yorkshire Archive online http://www.wyjs.org.uk/archives/ show Elias and Henry to have been in a business relationship with an Agnes Preston. I first speculated that she was perhaps a sister, but research shows that her name upon marriage to Henry Preston was Agnes/Anna Pitchforth, although the possibility that she was a Wilson who first married a Pitchforth still exists. (Henry Preston married Agnes Pitchforth 9 March 1640 in Elland. Agnes Preston, widdow, of Eland, died and was buried 3 Feb 1658, according to St. Mary Parish records in Elland.)

Henry acquired lands in 1664 in Rappahannock County, Virginia, which places their migration in a window between 1658-1664.

Elias and his presumed brother Henry seem to have migrated to Virginia in the mid-1660s. One might ask why? Since I seem to have a number of significant ancestors who migrated at that exact time, I did some research to try to understand the conditions in England at the time. Elias' early lifetime was very politically tumultuous, with the Civil Wars between the Royalists (supporters of King Charles I, who tried to abolish Parliament) and the Parliamentarians, who executed the King (1649), exiled his son, and replaced the monarchy with first a Commonwealth (1649-53) and then a Protectorate overseen by Oliver Cromwell (1653-58). The religious aspect of all this was that Cromwell and his followers were Puritans, who sought to rid the Church of England of its ecclesiastical and Catholic elements and become more like the Scottish Presbyterians. The monarchy was restored in 1660 when Charles II returned to retake the throne. Those who had supported the Protectorate and/or were Puritans and Presbyterians were now rebels against the crown.

These Wilsons were Protestant families, members of the Church of England. However, the parish in which Elias was baptized (Halifax Parish) was a Puritan stronghold during these years: "Halifax Parish Church witnessed further upheavals during the English Civil Wars of the seventeenth century, a period of bitter conflict, which caused severe disruption to the local textile trade. A Puritan stronghold, Halifax suffered occupation by both Royalist troops after the Royalist victory at Adwalton Moor in 1643 and by Parliamentarian forces after the Royalist defeat at Marston Moor." (see more, and pictures of the church, at http://www.halifaxminster.org.uk/century-of-revolution).

The other factor was the Bubonic Plague, which had its final epidemic in 1665-1666, which was the worst since the Black Death of the mid-1300s.

So either politics, religion, or avoiding the plague may have contributed to emigration to America.

Fortunately there are more records documenting ELIAS WILSON Sr b abt 1650 & his wife SUSANNA.

She was not SUSANNA JACOBUS, by the way. SUSANNA JACOBUS married 1st) ROBERT DAVIS, and 2nd) JOHN DOZIER ("Married Well & Often" Headley p 103) Anyway, ELIAS' wife SUSANNA, after he died in about 1700, married 2nd to Lt Col GEORGE TAYLOR in 1705, Richmond Co VA.

Here is a list of the children of ELIAS WILSON Sr & SUSANNA unknown, as per his will proved 1699/1700 Sittenburne Parish , Richmond Co VA. (formed from Farnham Parish, old Rappahanock Co VA)

--HENRY WILSON b abt 1681 m 1st) unknown; 2nd) WINIFRED JACOBUS (widow of FRANCIS YEATS, JOHN PYCROFT, & THOMAS WILLIAMS)

--JAMES WILSON b 1680s m 1st) MARY CRASKE; 2nd) MARTHA unknown
--ELIAS WILSON Jr b 1685 m MARY LANE (widow of ALVIN MOUNTJOY); he died 1707 Richmond Co VA as per his will, naming wife MARY, son ELIAS, bros HENRY & JAMES. His wife MARY married 3rd) to Dr JOSEPH BELFIELD in 1708
--ELIZABETH WILSON b 1680s m Major EDWARD MOSELEY, son of CAPT WILLIAM MOSELEY & MARTHA BRASSEUR.
--MARTHA WILSON b 1680s m EDWARD MORRIS, her son EDWARD MORRIS mentioned in ELIAS Sr's will
--SHEBA/PHEBA WILSON b 1676, died before 1700 m CHARLES SNEAD; her two sons CHARLES & ELIAS SNEAD mentIoned in ELIAS Sr' s will
--***BRIDGETT WILSON b about 1678 died before 1700 (not named in ELIAS Sr's will) married THOMAS NEWMAN Sr ; one son THOMAS NEWMAN. (Married Well & Often, Headley p 262)
--***JOHN WILSON b about 1675 (not named in ELIAS Sr's will, at least not in the abstracted transcription) m FRANCES (widow of McMILLION) in 1701, Richmond Co VA. He died 1709. His will only mentions brothers HENRY & JAMES, wife FRANCES, who was to give two years of schooling to THOMAS NEWMAN (his nephew, apparently), and Major EDWARD MOSELEY. He was definitely the son of ELIAS WILSON & SUSANNA, as per the very interesting 1676 will of THOMAS BLISSED of Old Rappahanock Co, see below.

The following is information about a family for whom Elias Wilson served as a witness to a wil.

Richmond County, VA, Order Book 2, 1694-1699, page 405, Court dated 7 June 1699 – The Last Will and The Last Will and Testament of Col. John Stone deceased, being presented to this Court by Mrs. Ann Metcalfe, the same was proved by the Oaths of Elias Wilson Senior and Thomas Lawson, witnesses thereto.

Will of Sarah Walker, Jan. 28, 1668/9, probated Dec. 29, 1679. I Sarah Walker Doe give & bequeth unto Coll. John Walker's six daughters as Followeth: [Note: She was the widow of Capt. Evidently, only two of his daughters, viz: Sarah and Esther Walker, were hers also, the other four daughters having been by his first wife Elizabeth. While this is called and listed as her will it was evidently an entirely different document, as she was later to marry again and to die as the wife of Col. John Stone of Rappahannock, later Richmond County. His will, now missing, was probated Nov. 3, 1698, by Elias Wilson and Thomas Lawson, in Richmond Co. His executors were: Anne Metcalfe (daughter), Richard Metcalfe (son-in-law), Henry Fleet (step-son) and Edwin Conway (his step-son-in-law).Nov. 2, 1672.]

On Sep 28, 1681, Rappahannock County: Edwin Conway: 900 acres in the Rappahannock River: Beg at Tacopason Spring, the beg. of a part. 5275 acres gtd. To Thos. Chetwood and John Prosser. Land Office Patents # 7, 1679-1689 vol 1 &2 pg 111 on reel 7: Library of Virginia Archives Section. Captain Henry Fleete (Sr.) was a justice of Lancaster County 1653, and on the division of the county (when Rappanhannock County, Virginia was formed) he was appointed by the Assembly, December 13, 1656, a Justice of Lancaster (of the quorum, and 2nd in the commission), and lieutenant- colonel of militia. (Lancaster Records). There is recorded in Northumberland County, Virginia (the date is gone, but is about 1659), a deed from Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Fleete (Sr.), conveying 300 acres of land to Christopher Garlington. Sarah, wife of Col. Henry Fleete (Sr.), joins in the deed. In 1650 he had a grant of 1,750 acres at Fleet's Bay, and received, in all, grants for 13,197 acres. From a record in Lancaster, May 8, 1661, it appears that Sarah Fleete was widow of Lt. Colonel Henry Fleete (Sr.). She married subsequently Col. John Walker of Rappahannock County (and formerly of Gloucester County), member of the Council, and had by this marriage (as appears from her will, recorded at Essex C. H.), several daughters, one of whom was named Sarah. Her name was Sarah Walker, and hence the name of Walker Conway). There is recorded in Lancaster, in 1715, and then acknowledged by Henry Fleete (Sr.), a deed from the said Henry Fleete (Sr.), who, at the time of making it, resided in Fairfield parish, Northumberland, conveying in consideration of £1,000, all his title to 2,000 acres of land in Cittenburne parish, which was granted to Col. Henry Fleete (Sr.) in 1657; afterwards, in 1661, granted to Walter Granger, who assigned it to Col. John Walker, and by Walker's will it was left to his (Walker's) daughter, Sarah, and had since been surveyed and divided by said Conway in right of his wife, Sarah. There are also several deeds at Essex C. H., which speak of Sarah, wife of Edwin Conway, as one of the daughters and co-heiresses of Col. John Walker.
