About Elizabeth "Betty" Motte
According to Sir Aemilius Irving, in his book "James Irving of Ironshore and his Descendants," Elizabeth Motte (Martin) was known as a great beauty, and was the inspiration for the children's rhyming song, "Hi Betty Martin."
"Hey Betty Martin,
Tip-toe, tip-toe
Hey Betty Martin,
Tip-toe fine
"Pretty Betty Martin,
Tip-toe, tip-toe
Couldn't find a husband
To suit her mind!"
Apparently her fussiness was eventually rewarded, however, as she wound up marrying Mr. Motte after all.
