About Elizabeth Oxenham
Wanganui Chronicle, 16 February 1905 DEATH. OXENHAM. On February 15, at her residence, Guyton Street, Elizabeth Oxenham, aged 93. The Funeral will tako place at New Plymouth on Saturday.
Taranaki Daily News, 18 February 1905 OBITUARY. MRS OXEXHAM. (Per Press Association.) WANGANUI, Feb. 16. An old resident in the person of Mrs Oxenham, aged 93, died at Wanganui yesterday. Deceased arrived by the first ship that came to New Plymouth. She leaves a large number of relatives. The deceased lady retained her faculties to the last. Mrs Oxenham came out from England with her husband, and resided in or about New Plymouth continuously ever since, till a few years ago she went to reside at Wanganui with Mrs S. Wright, one of her daughters. Like all other early New Plymouth settlers, the Oxenhams had to endure their share of the perils and inconveniences of early colonial life, and bore them sturdily and unflinchingly. It was quite an education in the incidents of early colonial life to have an hour's chat with the deceased lady. She had attained the great age of 93, and until a year or two ago was remarkably active, both in mind and body; and indeed, though latterly she had weakened a good deal physically, mentally she remained wonderfully acute and sympathetic with all that was going on. During the Maori war Mrs Oxenham devoted herself to the care of the suffering and wounded, doing such kindly work as lay in her powrer, and earning the gratitude of many. The surviving children are: Mrs Carrick, Waitara; Mrs S. Wright, Wanganui; Mrs W. H. Greenwood, Greymouth; Mrs W. Dingle, Hawera; Mr J. Oxenham. Ashburton; and Mr O. Oxenham. Oakura. The funeral takes place at 2 o'clock to-day, when deceased will, in accord with her expressed wish, be interred at Te Henui cemetery.)
MI: In loving memory of Thomas OXENHAM died 23rd January 1896 aged 90 years. Also of his son George Furze died 29th August 1854 aged 2 years and 6 months, And of his wife Elizabeth OXENHAM who died at Wanganui 15th February 1905 aged 93 years.
