Esther Hicks

Do not confuse her husband with Capt. Robert Hicks, Indian Trader who married Winifred Evans.

I am following this thread with interest, as I am also a descendant of Robert Hicks and Esther Luten. I hope I can provide some useful information for further research, and perhaps clarify a possible error in an earlier message.

Gordon Faber earlier provided the following, which he said was not necessarily correct or proven:

In fact, Robert Hicks did marry Esther Luten (the spelling I have chosen to use because it is the one most often found in the Chowan Co. NC records), the dau. of Maj. Thomas Luten, whose will of 16 Feb 1729 Chowan Co. NC mentions his dau. Esther Hicks and his son-in-law Robert Hicks, as well as a number of other children. In the will of this Robert Hicks dated 25 Nov 1733 Chowan Co. NC, Robert Hicks mentions his son Thomas. This information is taken from published will excerpts; if the original wills are still available, the accuracy of the excerpts could be verified.

There are many other land records and misc. public records which mention these people, especially in Chowan Co. NC; a comprehensive analysis of them could paint a much more complete picture of the dates of birth and marriage, places of residence, property owned, and relationships with other families. Perhaps the Dr. Elmer Hicks along with Clark B Hicks of Indianapolis, the gentlemen mentioned by Donna Shufelt, were involved in such an analysis. Hopefully the results of their efforts can be located and shared.

My information says that Thomas Hicks b. ca. 1710 Chowan Co. NC, d. ca. 1775 Wylliesburg, Charlotte Co. VA (the son of Robert Hicks and Esther Luten) married Elizabeth Jordan, the dau. of Charles Jordan. My information also says that Thomas Hicks and Elizabeth Jordan had a son Daniel Hicks b. ca. 1740 near Edenton, Chowan Co. NC, d. ca. 1793 or 1797, who mar. ca. 1764 in Charlotte Co. VA Lucy Butler b. ?, d. ca. 1814, parents unknown. Lucy Butler's middle name is said to be Sage. The above information has been provided to me without proof, so the records of the areas involved must be studied further. It is likely that many of these earlier families were Quakers; it is known that many Jordan families were, and I found last night that Gov. John Archdale of NC, an ancestor of the Pendleton and Connor families, among others, was a Quaker. This opens up another vast collection of records that may be pertinent to our Hicks families, even if our Hicks families were not Quakers! themselves.

My information says Daniel Hicks and Lucy Butler had a son Robert, specifically Robert V. Hicks b. 1770 Pittsylvania Co. VA, d. 1853 Masseyville, McNairy Co. TN. This Robert V. Hicks mar. 1789 Montgomery Co. NC Sarah Jordan b. 1773, dau. of Francis Jordan. Their daughter Sarah Ann Hicks b. 1 Feb 1812 Montgomery Co. NC, d. 25 Dec. 1889 McNairy Co. TN mar. Harvey Davidson, not Armstrong Nichols. Harvey and Sarah (Jordan) Davidson lived near her parents Robert and Sarah (Jordan) Hicks according to the 1850 census of McNairy Co. TN.

It was not Sarah Ann Hicks but rather Sarah Ellen Hicks b. 1825 d. 1890 who mar. Armstrong L. Nichols. Sarah Ellen Hicks was a dau. of Jacob Hicks and Anna Beaman, Jacob Hicks being a son of Robert V. Hicks and Sarah Jordan. This is the line of Shirley Naughton.

This information is probably all verifiable through various records, but I do not have all the necessary references. Perhaps together we can collect the bits and pieces of substantiating data.
