Theunis Botha Theunis Botha], b bef 15 April 1686. Called Botha after his mother, Maria Kickers' , 1700 divorce from Jan Cornelisz (who is shown as his father on the birth certificate). At which time she said her 7 children were Frederich Botha's. However, a recent DNA study by the University of Pretoria reveal him to have been the biological son of Ferdinandus Appel.'

He was not married to Maria Kickers, but fathered one of her children, namely Theunis Botha, and therefore had Maria not married Friedrich Botha who (through association and marriage) adopted Theunis, the following ancestors, namely Gen Louis Botha [Genl. Louis Botha] and P.W. Botha, should have had the surname Appel.

Ferdinandus Appel - a2b2 ~4/10/1665, leiersfiguur in vryburger gemeenskap asook burger van Stellenbosch. Word luitenant in 1695 v kompanie voetsoldate vd burgerkommando. In 1770 asook 1704 word hy verkies tot heemraad. Het vername aandeel gehad in die verset teen Willem Adriaan vd Stel en agv sy aandeel hierin word hy na Nederland gestuur waar klagskrifte vd vryburgers aan die Here XVII oorhandig is, wat tot gevolg het dat vd Stel na Nederland teruggeroep word. Keer terug na SA in 1707. Gedurende 1699 word grond aan hom toegeken naby die mond vd Eersterivier, wat later verdeel word in "Vergenoegd" en "Geduld".
