About Ferencz (Ephraim Yitzhak) Schwartz

Parents and Birth

Ferencz (Ephraim Yitzhak) was born to Jozsef Schwartz and Hani Klein at some point in the early 1800s. The 1848 census of Hajdunanas states that Ferencz was born in Hajdunanas, but there is no mention of a Jozsef Schwartz (or a Ferencz Schwartz) in the 1832, 1833, 1839, 1844, or 1846 census of Hajdunanas, so perhaps they actually lived in another town.

Jozsef and Hani apparently died when Ferencz was fairly young, since he named his first two children Hani and Jozsef (both born before 1850).

According to Ferencz’s death record (in 1897), he was born in approximately 1827. The 1848 census, however, says that he was born in approximately 1822, and the 1850 census of Hajdunanas says that he was born in approximately 1815.

Wives and Children

Ferencz apparently married at least four times: (1) Leni/Lina/Erszebet (unknown surname), married before 1844; (2) Barbara Reichman, married sometime between 1849 and 1854; (3) Judisz Grunfeld, married sometime between 1854 and 1856; and (4) Regi Gutman, married sometime between 1868 and 1874.

We know that this is the same Ferencz Schwartz because he lived in the same town (Hajdunanas), had the same Hebrew name (Ephraim Yitzhak), had the same occupation (tailor), his wives never overlapped, and because books and family lore indicate that certain of his children from different wives were siblings. However, as of yet no marriage records (or death records for the wives) have been located. The Jewish records simply show an aging Ferencz having children with new wives.

It is also possible that Ferencz was married to Barbara/Borbala/Pepi Kartunkel between Leni and Barbara Reichman. However, there does not currently seem to be sufficient evidence to say that this is the same Ferencz Schwartz.

Ferencz had at least 16 children:
