Our family story really begins in North Carolina in 1729 with Francis Nunn in Craven County. Where he came from, we do not know. It may have been Virginia, or England, or a Welsh port, or elsewhere. But all evidence indicates a man and a family that strongly supported the English crown.
Newbern or "New Bern" had been settled in 1709 by a Swiss colony led by Baron von DeGraffenreid. Until 179, North Carolina had been divided into three counties: Albermarle, adjoining the Virginia line to the north; Clarendon adjoining the South Carolina line to the south; Bath, the county in between the two. Craven Precinct was a portion of Bath County until it was made into a county in 1729.
On December 16, 1729, Francis Nunn purchased 640 acres of land from William Handcock, Jr. This land was known as Fort Barnwell, where a great battle was fought on January 28, 1712 between the Tuscarora Indians and Colonel John Barnwell and his Indian Allies. Francis Nunn also owned other land in Craven County. In 1732, he sold 100 acres of this original land to Thomas White.
Upon the death of Francis Nunn, intestate, possibly in 1738, his oldest son, William inherited all of his lands by old English law. By a deed, dated August 17, 1740, William conveyed to his brother, Francis 250 acres of land, stating he had inherited it from his father, Francis. In 1745, William sold the last 290 acres of the original land to John Williams. Thus all of the original land that Francis purchased in 1729 passed from the family.
GEDCOM Note
Earliest record of Francis (b. abt. 1687) is a Bill Of Sale showing he bought 640 acres
