Friedrich III, der Strenge (the Strict) (14 December 1332 in Dresden – 21 May 1381 in Altenburg), Landgrave of Thuringia and Margrave of Meissen, son of Frederick II, Margrave of Meissen and Matilde of Bavaria.
He took over the government for his brothers William, Balthasar and Ludwig (Bishop of Bamberg) after the death of the father in 1349. One year later the emperor gave the Mark Meissen to the four brothers jointly. In 1368 began the common government, afterwards the brothers changed every two years at the point of the rule. In 1379 they dealed their possession.
He was married with Katherina von Henneberg, heiress of Coburg, Neustadt, Sonneberg, Neuhaus, Rodach, etc (died Coburg 15 July 1397), daughter of Count Heinrich XII von Henneberg. They had three sons:

Wilhelm der Reiche (23 April 1371 – 30 March 1425)

Friedrich III., der Strenge, auch der Freundholdige (* 14. Dezember 1332 in Dresden; † 21. Mai 1381 in Altenburg) war Landgraf von Thüringen und Markgraf von Meißen.
Leben
Als Sohn Friedrichs des Ernsthaften übernahm er 1349 die väterlichen Länder Meißen und Thüringen, die er gemeinsam mit seinen Brüdern Balthasar und Wilhelm I. regierte.
Seine Gemahlin Katharina brachte ihm als Mitgift einen großen Teil der Grafschaft Henneberg (Pflege Coburg) ein. Durch Kauf erwarb er ferner Elgersburg, Zörbig, Teile der Markgrafschaft Landsberg und die Stadt Sangerhausen.
Die Vögte von Plauen und die Grafen von Schwarzburg zwang er mit Gewalt zu einer Reihe von Abtretungen. Weiterhin vernichtete er gemeinsam mit Heinrich II. von Hessen den Sternerbund.
Friedrich starb am 21. Mai 1381 in Altenburg. Seine Grabstätte befindet sich in der Fürstenkapelle von Kloster Altzella.
Nachkommen
Friedrich der Strenge war seit 1346 mit Katharina von Henneberg († 15. Juli 1397 in Meißen) verheiratet, die ihm folgende vier Söhne gebar:
1. Friedrich († jung, um 1350)
2. Friedrich der Streitbare (1370–1428)
3. Wilhelm der Reiche (1371–1425)
4. Georg (* 1380; † 9. Dezember 1401 in Coburg)

After Frederick III's death Meissen was divided between his three sons and Thuringia was inherited by his brothers; later pass to his nephew Frederick IV, Landgrave of Thuringia, son of his brother Balthasar and ultimately inherited by Frederick the Strict's grandson, Frederick II, Elector of Saxony.
