Notes
George Ganz adopted the name Goose before moving to Virginia (Gans translates to Goose).
In 1780 George Goose and Mary (maiden name unknown) Goose deeded 3 acres for a German church and school house for use by both Lutheran and Calvinist sects in Frederick County Virginia. By law, when land was sold, the wife had to be included in the transaction to preserve her dower rights. It is on this deed that we learn that George’s wife’s given name was Mary.
In March of 1798 George Goose of Frederick County, Virginia made a will which was probated in court on 2nd of July 1798 after he had died. In this will he lists his wife, Fanny, and nine children: “John Goose, Andrew Goose, George Goose, Jacob Goose, Mary Gardner Wife of Daniel Gardner, Elizabeth Margerate Wife of Nicholas DLong, Sarah Summers, Elizabeth Goose, and Susannah Goose…” It appears by this time his wife Mary had died and he had married Fanny.
George did not use the name surname Gans/Gantz, which is German for Goose in any of the documents found at this time for him, however, some of his children used Gantz/Ganz as their surname, etc in their documents.
