About Gon do say quay
Gon do say quay was a Chippewa woman from the Leech Lake Pillager Band of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe
(The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, also known as the Leech Lake Band of Chippewa Indians or the Leech Lake Band of Minnesota Chippewa Tribe)
11,000 acres illegally taken from the Chippewa and made part of the Chippewa National Forest will be returned as part of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Reservation Restoration Act
Chippewa wigwam and family, Leech Lake, Minnesota
Pillager Band of Chippewa Indians (or simply the Pillagers; Makandwewininiwag in the Ojibwe language) are a historical band of Chippewa (Ojibwe) who settled at the headwaters of the Mississippi River in present-day Minnesota.
The Leech Lake Reservation is an Indian reservation in the north-central Minnesota counties of Cass, Itasca, Beltrami, and Hubbard. The reservation forms the land base for the federally recognized Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, one of six bands comprising the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe... The Leech Lake Reservation was not established in a single legislative act. Rather, it grew from the amalgamation of multiple treaties, executive orders, and various articles of legislation spanning many decades. The core areas of the reservation were established by the 1855 treaty of Washington, which formed three smaller reservations for the Pillager Band of Chippewa Indians at Leech Lake, Cass Lake, and Lake Winnibigoshish. New treaties in 1864 and 1867 reshaped and consolidated these reservations, when the United States sought with little success to concentrate Ojibwes from other reservations together at a single location. The reservation was further modified by several executive orders in the 1870s, one of which created the White Oak Point reservation of the Mississippi Band.

Biography:
Born c. 1857 as Gon do say quay to unknown parents
She is shown as single in the 1885 census at the age of 28, it is not known whether she ever married or had children. She did take in a young nephew and raised him for many years until he was 18 and, as was typical of a young man, moved on/out. In 1899 he is recorded as age 13 and is called nephew, which would infer that she had siblings who did marry, but census reports before 1885 do not seem available to confirm this.
In 1886 she was listed as single living under the auspices of Chief Way gon e gwon abe, as was another Chippewa by the name of Omundis (43), also later committed from the White Earth Agency to the Canton Asylum in 1905.
According to Carla Joinson in her book Vanished in Hiawatha, Gon do say quay was admitted to the Canton Asylum on July 12, 1918 (age 61), and diagnosed as demented with senile psychosis. (Dementia-related psychosis is a condition that can affect people with dementia, causing them to experience a decline in mental abilities and psychotic symptoms. Symptoms can vary depending on the type of dementia, a person's overall health, and other risk factors. Some common symptoms include hallucinations, false sensory perceptions that can be visual, auditory, or olfactory, delusions that manifest themselves as unrealistic beliefs that are out of touch with a person's cultural and social background, paranoia in the form of irrational suspicion, agitation or aggression, and depression.)
Gon do say quay was transferred to St. Elizabeths Hospital on December 22, 1933, when the Canton Asylum was closed, and died shortly after arrival. Records show that she died on May 16, 1934, of arthrosis (a heart problem of multiple sources that's present at birth), and chronic nephritis (nephritis is the inflammation of the kidneys).

Research Notes:
-Gonda-say-quay never married but may have had several partnership relations from which there were children
-Question: Was Gonda-say-quay an Otter Tail Pillager, or a Leech Lake Pillager, or the same person? The June 30, 1885, census of the Otter Tail Pillagers lists on line 2 as wife of the chief (44), Say Say Gun O Quay (age 45) AND in a different census from 1885 titled Leech Lake Pillagers, we find on line 2, wife of the chief (46), ... Go Quay (Answer: NO, in the 1923 census of the Consolidated Chippewa BOTH the Leech Lake tribe and the Otter Tail tribe exist as separate entities at the same time. She is NOT Say Say Gun o Quay.) In the 1885 census of White Earth, the Leech Lake Pillagers and the Otter Point Chippewa were separate and distinct tribes.
-Gon do say quay and Say say gun o quay were different persons but often identified as the same.
-In the 1885 census for both the Otter Tail Pillagers and the Leech Lake Pillagers, the wife of the chief is too old to be Gonda-say-quay, who would have been c. 28 years old. these two women are 38 years old.
"The Hiawatha facility was closed in December 1933. Some of the patients were sent home, others were sent to St. Elizabeths (http://sdgenweb.com/lincoln/hiawatha.htm; see also Yellow Bird 2002). At least 10 of the Native Americans identified in the St. Elizabeths East Campus Cemetery were originally from Hiawatha based on research by Ms. Frances McMillen (personal communication 2009).
Although Sluby (2008:4) lists 19 Indians, six of these are listed incorrectly and an additional four are entirely omitted. Table 2 provides a corrected list of the Native American burials. To this list, McMillen has been able to add at least 11 additional names: Madeline Dauphinais, Kitty Spicer, Rose Wash or Washa, Yazza Sonna, Gondosayquay, Ollie Yarlott, Peter Picotte, Joanna Augusta, Joe McEwin, Mary Westerman, and Oscar Hope."
