About Hannah Breeden

GEDCOM Note

Hannah was listed as Hannah Naling in Shenandoah County, VA marriage records, but two deeds (one to and one from) James Breeding Jr. and Hannah his wife tend to prove that she was Hannah Newland, daughter of Daniel Newland Sr of Shenandoah County, VA. Shenandoah County, Deed Book E, p 270 10 May 1785 Between Daniel Newland of the County of Shenandoah (to) James Breeding and Hanna (sic) his wife of the same County... in consideration of the natural love and affection which he beareth unto said James Breeding and Hannah his wife... a parcel of land lying on the North River of Shenandoah, it being a moiety of a tract of two hundred and sixty acres which was granted to said Daniel Newland by deed from the Proprietors office bearing the date the first day of March 1763... containing one hundred thirty acres of land.. Signed Daniel (x) Newland Witnessed Peter Colbank Jorge Countz Jacob Rinker Jr. Recorded 30 June 1785 Shenandoah County, Deed Book F, p 188 27 Sept. 1786 Between Daniel Newland & James Breeding Jun. and Hanah (sic) his wife of the County of Shenandoah (to) William Smith of said County for L. 70 a tract lying on the North River of Shenandoah, it being a moiety of a tract of 260 acres which was granted to said Daniel Newland by deed from the proprietors 1 March 1763 and said Daniel Newland conveyed 130 acres thereof to his son Daniel Newland and now the remainder thereof the said Daniel Newland the elder and James Breeding and Hannah his wife do hereby convey unto William Smith containing 130 acres of land. Signed Daniel (DN) Newland James (X) Breeding Witness none Recorded 28 Sept 1786 The above records show that James Breeden Jr's. wife was Hannah Newland not Hannah Naling and that she was probably a daughter of Daniel Newland Sr. I presume that the reason she is not mentioned in his will (Proved 19 February 1788 in Shenandoah County, VA) is that the above 130 Acres was her inheritance and she already had it before Daniel's death. -- J. J. Henry -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ In April and May of 1807, John, James, William and William Breeding,Jr. had their property surveyed in order to file claims for land grants with the State of TN. The land grants were issued in June 1810. These properties were located in Sevier County at the base of English Mountain in an area known as Jones Cove. Several property records mention the East Fork of the Little Pigeon River and Wilhite's Creek. The record Book of the Forks of the Little Pigeon Baptist Church is a valuable historical document that has been preserved by The First Baptist Church of Sevierville. In 1819, the Bethel Church was constituted into a distinct church of 53 members. Among these members were James Breeden, Hanner(Hannah) Breeden, William Breeding, Sr., Elizabeth Breeden and Sarah Breeden. In January 1821, William Breeden and wife Sarah Breeden along with Elizabeth Breeden were granted a letter of dismission.(It might suggest they were moving, perhaps from the region) In the 1830 Sevier County Census, Hannah Breeden was listed as the head of household. Her age was listed as 60 but not yet 70. She was living with two females age 20 but not yet 30, a male five but not yet ten years old and two males under age five. Also listed as heads of households were John Breeden, age 30-4; Bryant Breeden, age 20-30 and William Breeden, age 40-50. This information suggests that James died before 1830. In the 1850 Sevier County census, Hannah Breeden was listed as 85 years old and living in the household of Joseph Webb and his wife Lydia who is 40. Lydia was likely a daughter of Hannah. William Breeden named one of his daughters Lydia. The earlier Breeden's appeared to observe the naming customs of the day in which to oldest son was named for his father, the second son named after the mother's father, the third son is named after the father himself. The fourth through the end son is named after a favorite brother or friend(usually of the fathers) The eldest daughter was named after the maternal grandmother, the second daughter after the paternal grandmother and the third daughter after the mother. There were other variations, but the Breeden's named their children after family members. There has been a loss of Sevier County records due to fire which is regrettable because it has made associating James and Hannah Breeden as the progenitors of the Sevier County Breeden's difficult. Researchers show that James Breeding, Sr.(b abt 1735) in Shenandoah County, VA and died about 1804 in Lee County Virginia and his wife Sarah had the following children: James Breeding, Jr, Jeremiah Breeding, Sylvia(Siley) Breeding, Bryant Breeding, Byron Breeding and Elizabeth Breeding. James Breeding, Jr. was born about 1765 in Shenandoah. County. While other siblings are documented with information about their wives and children, James is listed with only his wife, Hannah Naling/Newland. There are listed as married February 25, 1784 in Shenandoah County, Va. The Breedings of Virginia had the names Bryant, William, John and James as prominent names as do the Sevier County Breeden's. Sevier County researchers continue looking for proof of a connection to the Shenandoah County and Lee County Breedings. - billan36@vallnet.com
