About Hans "Hannes" Balthasar Reitenauer
Note about nickname "Hannes":
This use of "Hannes" is atypical, because this nickname is given to those with the name "Johannes". But in this case, there seems to be an exception. We know this because of the baptism record for granddaughter Maria Susanna Stauffer , daughter of son Johan "John" Reitenauer , whose sponsors were both children of Balthasar's:
"Christoph Reitenauer and Maria Elizabeth, both Hannes Reitenauers children."
These are both known children of Hans Balthasar's, so it confirms the relationship.
The Reitenauer clan left Alsace, France and sailed to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on multiple ships between 1738 and 1747. They were exiled Huguenot Protestants, from the Alsace region of France, who left because of religious edicts. Most were the grown children of Nicolaus “Claus” Reitenauer, I , with their wives and children of their own.
After arrival, most of these immigrants passed through Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, and stayed only briefly on their way to Frederick County, Maryland. Some even went further into Virginia and West Virginia. But one son stayed in Montgomery County. Hans Balthasar (or "Hannes" as he apparently preferred) brought with him from France a sizeable number of sons and daughters, most of whom married in and stayed in Pennsylvania to raise their families. There were a number who did so in New Hanover, Montgomery County, and others who moved to Pike or Oley Township, Berks County.
Children of the Pennsylvania families often did continue onwards to Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, Virginia, and even Missouri, but there remains a Ridenour presence in Pennsylvania even to the modern day.
