NAME

Hendrik Schoeman

VARIATIONS OF THE NAME

Hendrick / Heinrich - Schumacher / Schoenmaker / Schoemaker / Schoenman

ORIGIN OF THE NAME

The original name cannot be determined. Hendrik could not write and signed by means of drawing a cross. The name Heinrich Schumacher could not be found in any official document and probably only appears in De Villiers and Pama’s book “Geslagsregisters van ou Kaapse Families”

BIRTH DATE

Circa 1700

BIRTH PLACE

In the marriage register of Hendrik and Martha Olivier in Drakenstein, he indicates his place of origin as “Bosha”. This probably refers to Bosau, next to the Plöngermeer east of Neumünster.

In the marriage register of Hendrik and Johanna, he indicates his place of origin as Frederikstad (Friedrichstadt). Friederichstadt is located on the convergence of the Treene and Eider river south of the Danish border, approximately 100km from Bosau.

It will appear as if Hendrik was born and raised in Bosau and then worked in Friedrichstadt for a period, before moving to the Netherlands to work for the VOC as a sailor.

He arrived on 21 October 1724 from Sleeswyk-Holstein (Schleswig-Holstein) on the ship Meijenberg while working as a sailor.

On 18 November 1734, the Political Council gathered and declared Hendrik a free citizen.
