"Henry Briggs, born circa 1635."

Source: Sons of The Revolution Quarterly Magazine, Vol. IV, July 1925, No. 3, p. 20.

"He appears to have been a Captain in the militia of Surry at one time, as there is a note to 'Captain Briggs' in the Surry records date June 4, 1665." Source: Surry D. & W. 1645-71, p. 258.
"He moved to Surry Co, prior to Nov. 5, 1662, on which date he appears as a member of a jury in Surry." Source: Surry D. & W. 1645-71, p. 199.

"Gabriel Briggs was probably Henry's brother, or possibly his father, and the two men may have been grandsons of Henry Briggs of the London Company. There may have been some connection of Henry Briggs with the Hill family of Charles City Co., as Col. Edward Hill was Mr. Briggs' security on the Gabriel Briggs' estate, and we find later that Henry Briggs was guardian of Mary, orphan of Geroge Hill." Source: Surry D. & W. 1645-71,p. 275.

"Henry Briggs married first about 1661-2, Mary, widow of John Washington....She was dead by July 5, 1681, when Henry Briggs and Margery his wife deeded land to Thomas Blunt. The second wife of Henry Briggs was Margery Gilliam, widow of John Gilliam of Henrico Co., and he seems to have had no children by the second marriage. Henry Briggs died in Surry Co., in 1686. His will, dated Sept.26, 1681 and probated July 6, 1686, leaves his property to his sons Henry, Charles, George, and Samuel, his 'son-in-law' Thomas Blunt, his daughter Marie Brigss, and his wife Margerie."

Children: Henry, Charles, Samuel, George, and Mary
Source: Southside Virginia Families by John Bennett Boddie, Vol. 1, pp. 106-107.

The following paragraph, taken from Southside Virginia Families by J.B. Boddie offers a possible family relationship for this family:

"There was a Henry Briggs who was an active member of the London Company in 1619. He had a son Henry who came to America and a son Thomas who remained in England. A letter from Henry was written to Thomas complaining of the hardships in Virginia. The relationship of this family to Henry Briggs of Surry is uncertain. Henry Briggs, the famous mathematician, was born at Worley Woods, Yorkshire in 1561 and died in 1631. He may have been the same man as the Henry Briggs of of the London Company which was dissolved in 1624."
"Henry Briggs (? -1681), the immigrant of this family, first appears in the Charles City County, Virginia records in 1656 with a Gabriel Briggs as witnesses. In 1662 Henry was administrator of Gabriel Brigg's estate. Henry moved to Surry County before November, 1662 when he appears on a jury and he lived in that county until his death in 1686. About 1661 he married Mary ________, a widow who had been married three times previously ( to Richard Blunt, Charles Ford and John Washington). His second wife's name was Margerie _____ Gillam, also a widow. There were no children by the second marriage. The children mentioned in his will were Henry (below), Charles, Samuel (m. Mary Bailey), George (unmarried) and Mary."
"Their son, Henry Briggs (1662-1739), was interpreter to the Nottoway, Meherrin and Nansemond Indians from 1705 until 1726. In a Virginia-North Carolina border dispute, he testified that he had been familiar with these Indians since he was 13 years of age. He served in the Surry Count Militia in 1687 and was married, somewhat late in life, Elizabeth Lucas, the daughter of William and Grace ______ Lucas. The children named in his will were Mary (Bedinfield), Ann (Barton), Jane (Day), Hannah (Hill), Priscilla (Barker) and Elizabeth (Chappell)."
"In Isle of Wight County, prior to 1721, the daughter Elizabeth Briggs married James Chappell. Their children were James, Thomas, Elizabeth (Mason), Mary (Gee), Sarah (Mason), Rebecca (Northington), Amy (Smith), John (who married MaryHines), Ann (Tatum?), Lucretia (Carter), and Howell."
"Samuel and Mary Briggs (above) had a son William Briggs, who married Mary Cooke. They had three daughters who married sons of James and Elizabeth Chappell, their second cousins:

  • Elizabeth Briggs married James Chappell II
  • Mary Briggs married Thomas Chappell
  • Rebecca Briggs married Howell Chappell"

Henry Briggs III was a Virginia colonist.Henry was born about 1635 in Charles City County, Virginia. He is said to be the son of Henry Briggs and Margery Hills, this is unconfirmed.

Henry first appears in records on 1 February 1655/6 in Charles City County. On 3 February 1657 Henry Briggs and Gabriell Briggs were witnesses to a deed made by Mrs. Elizabeth Hacker for the sale of property to Daniel Baudovin and George Marshall of London. On 3 June 1662 Henry Briggs was granted administration on the estate of Gabriel Briggs, deceased, in Charles City County, Col. Edward Hill being his security. The relationship of Henry and Gabriel Briggs is unclear. Boddie (Southside Virginia Families) suggests Gabriel may have been Henry's brother or possibly his father.

Henry is found in Surry County, Virginia, prior to 5 November 1662, on which date he appears as a member of a jury in Surry; he continued to live in Surry county until his death in 1686.
