PARTICULARS OF DOYLE'S DEATH. Probably a Case of Suicide. On further investigation into the circumstances of the death of Henry Doyle, who died Friday night from the effects of injuries received by falling from a fourth story window, at the boarding house of Mrs. Childs, it would appear to be a case of suicide. Doyle was upwards of 64 years of age, and for about six years has been in this vicinity, the most of the time as an inmate of the Soldiers' Home it Togus. He was born in Canada, but came to Augusta from Boston, where he now has a son and two daughters, who are said to be in good circumstances, the son being a printer. and the daughters well married. His children did not want him to enter the asylum and the old man has been heard to remark that they would not own him because he had done His first wife died in Boston, but about ten months ago he married his present wife. who is about forty years old. This mariage has not been a happy one, and probbly led Doyle to throw himself from the vindow and thus end his days. It is said 0. that the woman had not been unfaithful to im but that she was fretful towards him. ind did not want to live with him. He had ought and fitted up a comfortable home near y the Soldiers' Asylum, but as she would not live there he sold it again. Thursday afternoon. Doyle came from the Iome to Mrs. Childs' boarding house, which is in the block over Tibbett's store. appeared melancholy and in a troubled state of mind. That night in talking with Mrs. Childs he said that he had loved Lizzie his wife) better than he ever had any womin and that if she would not live with him e would cut his throat. Friday afternoon the landlady urged him to go back to the fome, as his leave of absence was about out but he refused, saying that he should tay there till he saw his wife, if it wasn't for a month. for she had left the boarding house the night he came there, and did not return till Friday night. Afer Doyle and a friend of his had eaten their suppers, between ive and six o'clock, he went to his room. ind went to bed. and the inmates of the house heard nothing of him till the police informed them of Doyle's condition. He Officer Breen who happened to be near y and to see the unfortunate man as he ame falling down, thought that it was a lanket or other piece of bedding that had fallen from a window. He first struck upon the irons of an awning frame over L. Tibbett's store door and bent these considerably. When taken up his eyes were closed and till his death he did not open them or make a single movement. Dr. Bolan says that his symptoms indicated concussion of the brain. out the only scars about him were upon his feet and legs. When picked up all of his ipparel was on except his coat and boots. Mrs. Childs says that Doyle had not been Irinking, which is also the opinion of Dr. Bolan. The officers say that he occasionally Irank but never badly. He is spoken of as a good appearing and pleasant man. Some have suggested that Doyle might have been thrown from the window, but those acquainted with the affair and other parties think that this is not probable. Coroner Libby did not deem that an inquest was necessary, as it appeared to be a case of suicide or an accident. The remains were taken to l'ogus, Saturday afternoon. for interment.

Note 1: At FS his name added as Henry P. Doyle, father of Margaret Jane Maxwell (Margaret J. Doyle, b 1850) married at date 26 July 1870, a Doyle probably was surname of the ancestors of his father side or of the his mother's birth and maiden surname (?).

Note 2 (???): Based at above of his name as Henry P. Doyle, seems and probably maybe he was the this same person Henry P. Doyle see: Grave

Henry P. Doyle (4 May 1819, Quebec, Canada - 19 Sep 1879, Augusta, Kennebec County, Maine, USA)
Burial: Togus National Cemetery, Chelsea, Kennebec County, Maine, USA

PVT - Served with Co G, 57th NY Inf. and Co C, 2nd MA Heavy Artillery.
Henry P. Doyle, died from a fall from a fourth story window, at the boarding house of Mrs. Childs, Augusta, ME.
Henry has a wife Mary Doyle.

Note 3: In the book of TWENTY-SIXTH REGIMENT MASSACHUSETTS VOLUNTEER INFANTRY Three Years (Re-enlisted), p. 92 - Putnam, John - Priv. - Res. South Acton; 27, machinist; enl. Sept. 2, 1861; must. Oct. 18, 1861; must. out Nov. 7, 1864. See Co. "E" 6th Mass. Inf. (9 mos.). - John Putnam (b. 1834), probably and maybe was his brother (?).

Note 4: In the book of Massachusetts soldiers, sailors, and marines in the civil war are listed few persons with the Putnam surname, probably and maybe they all were his relatives (?).

Conclusion:

  • Yes, Henry Putnam (b. c. 1820) or Henry P. Doyle (b. 4 May 1819) (mentioned above) in the Note 2 based on the records of Census 1850, 1855, 1860 (?) (see Note 1 of Census, 1860, below of the listed Records), 1865, 1870 is a same person, seems he was married 2 times, 1st marriage with Jane and their children had a Doyle surname, but for family reasons, they were took their mother's maiden name in order of the Court in Boston, Mass. in 1881, after her death. A reason could be a her divorce in 1869/1870 (or bet. 1865- 1870) (?) (information and evidence about their divorce not found - probably has happened but not registered in the records) from a their father Henry Putnam Doyle (Henry P. Doyle), because he was listed and mentioned in Census (1870) only with his 2nd wife Mary Flynn (b. c. 1820/1828, Ireland) in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States.
  • Seems he was firstly mentioned with the name Henry Putnam (see profile of Jane Doyle) or Henry P. Doyle, and sources gives a little missunderstanding with his name and surname (such that his given name was Henry P. and surname Doyle), however seems his given name was Henry and surname Putnam Doyle. The Putnam was mentioned as surname, not as given first name.
  • Based at above facts from the above records a surname Doyle probably was at his mother's side or father's side (?), and his mother or father - had birth surname Doyle. - Need confirmation who exactly of his parents had surname Putnam or Doyle !!!

Note 1 (Census, 1860): Seems he was the same person metioned as Henry Doyle (b. c. 1820, Canada), 40y, painter, with wife Janie Doyle (Jane) 33y (b.c. 1827, Ireland) and daughter Louise (b. c. 1858 or betw. 1857-1858 (c. 1860), NY), - all settled in 1st District 8th Ward, New York, New York, US; however Janie (Jane) 39y, (b. c. 1831) and Louisa 10y (b. c. 1860) were mentioned in Census 1870 ("United States Census, 1870", , FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M8F7-YYV : Tue Mar 05 04:22:10 UTC 2024), Entry for Jane Doyle and Albert Sullivan, 1870.) and also listed seems son Thomas Doyle 7y (b. c. 1863), but Henry was not mentioned and listed, possible reason: in meantime probably he was abandoned them.
