Biography
Updated 14 September 2024
Henry King was born in either Nansemond or Isle of Wight in the Virginia Colony abt 1656. He was listed on the 1704 Rent Rolls of Nansemond Co., VA.
Henry King apparently moved to Chowan Precinct in 1697 and near Bennett's Creek, Gatesville, NC by 1711. A Henry King had patented a number of land tracts in Chowan Precinct of Albemarle Co (perhaps abbreviated for 'colony') and Nansemond Virginia [although this might be his younger nephew, Henry son of his brother, William who also went to Chowan where he met and married Elizabeth Parker (?)]
Henry King probably died on 9 Mar 1716 or sometime between Oct. 2, 1715 when he was given a power of attorney and April 4, 1716, when his widow was referred to the wife of Gerrard Lynch and relick of Mr. Henry King. He lived in Salmon Creek area, Chowan (now Bertie) County, North Carolina[1] leaving a Will[2][1] in Chowan Precinct, Albemarle Co, North Carolina on 2 Feb 1714/15 and proved on 18 Apr 1716.
Henry King had 4 sons and 4 daughters. His eldest son, William, was not named in his 1715 will.

Note: Henry's wife Catherine wasn't mentioned in the above will. She married shortly after his death in 1716 and on Nov. 15, 1716 she and husband Gerrard Linch asked the Court for a division of the estate and for her to get 1/3, and the other to be divided among the many children. This information was found in Colonial Records by Saunders at the Madison County Library in Jackson, Tennessee. The Will above shows that it was probated in April of 1716.

On 9/10/1760, William bought 64 acres next to his brother Henry on Broad Branch from his brother Charles. (S) Bertie Co., NC, DB-L, P447.[1] This William is not married to Mary Curle. Catherine - After the death of Henry, and by Apr. 1716, she married second Gerrard LYNCH. Gerrard and Catherine LYNCH sold 640 acres of her land on that date. Catherine is the, daughter of John and Mary (FALKE) CLARKE, in 1684, Isle of Wight Co., VA. Catherine CLARKE married about 1679 Henry King (b. about 1658; d. after 1740, Brunswick Co., VA) as his first wife. Henry King, Jr., son of Catherine (CLARKE) King, was born about 1681, who had possession of, and sold land previously owned by his grandfather John CLARKE.

Henry King2 was born 1650/1655 and died in 1716.
He married (1) Elizabeth Clarke and had two sons: William3 and Henry3.
He married (2) Catherine Clarke born 1670. She was the daughter of John Clarke of Surrey County. She and Henry King married in 1684. John Clarke married Mary Falke daughter of John Flake, in 1670. Catherine was about 14 years of age. This must have been the second marriage of John Clarke. From the following document we could presume that Elizabeth was the daughter of a previous marriage. ...
Henry King's^2 children were: Michael^3, Charles^3, Henry^3, Elizabeth^3, Catherine^3, Ann^3, and Mary^3. As mentioned previously nothing was mentioned in the Will about his son William who received an inheritance from John Clarke, father-in-law of Henry King.
After the death of Henry King^2, his brother Dr. John King^2 became the guardian of his minor son Michael^3. His sons remained in the general area of Chowan and Bertie Counties, North Carolina.
Henry King (#1) (ca.1674-ca.1716) was born in Nansemond County, Virginia and he continued to own property there until his death. He patented land in North Carolina on Bennett’s Creek in 1701. Today this property would be found within the boundaries of Gates County. Some King family researchers believe his Henry King (#1) had married twice prior to his move into North Carolina. However, it appears this Henry King was probably confused with another Henry King who lived in Surry County, Virginia in the late 1600’s. Henry King (#1), one of the direct ancestors of Charles Shaw King, married only once which appears to be supported by existing records. He married a Catherine (or Katherine), last name unknown, about 1695 and the following children were born from this union; Michael King (#3) (ca.1698-1741), Elizabeth (ca.1700-?), Henry (#2) (ca.1702-ca.1750), Charles (ca.1704-?), Catherine (ca. 1706-?), Ann (ca.1708-?), and Mary (ca.1710-?). The names of these children and approximate order of their births were derived from the will of Henry King (#1) which was written in the Chowan Precinct of Albemarle County, North Carolina on 25 February 1714. There was some contention over the will Henry (#1) left and some information about this can be found in the colonial records of North Carolina. Henry King (#1)’s widow remarried soon after his death to a Gerrard Lynch. Her name can be found in Bertie County court records where she assisted her son, Henry (#2), purchase his first property n Bertie in 1725. All of the King children were minors when their father died either in the latter part of 1715 or early part of 1716. His will called for all of his children to receive land, but did not provide any for his wife. Catherine contested this with the assistance of her new husband and won. Older sons, Michael (#3) and Henry (#2) were to receive land in the Chowan Precinct of North Carolina and in Nansemond County, Virginia. The rest of the children were to receive land only in the Chowan Precinct. Henry (#1)’s brother, John, served as the guardian to Michael (#3), whom I believe to have been the eldest son. John was probably living in the Chowan Precinct of the Province of North Carolina, now Gates County, at this time and records pndicate that he assisted Henry (#1) quite often with his business transactions. No mention is made of guardians for the other children of Henry (#1) so they must have remained with their mother and her new husband until they came of age. Henry (#1)’s will was proved in Chowan Precinct Court in April of 1716.
