Hugh Atherstone is the direct ancestor of all the Atherstones in Africa. He, in company with his two brothers, owned a cloth-dyeing business. He lived in Brewhouse Yard, Nottingham, and was highly respected and well-known citizen. His portrait was painted by Thomas Barber.
Hugh Atherstone, 1743 Higham-on-the-Hill, Leicestershire bur. Ockbrook, Derbyshire 1819 married Ann Green and had a family of 15, most of whom were baptised at St. Nicholas, Nottingham.
