About Isabel de Beaumont, Duchess of Lancaster
Isabel of Beaumont
Isabel de Beaumont, Duchess of Lancaster, of the House of Brienne (c. 1320 – 1361) was an English noblewoman, being the youngest daughter and child of Henry de Beaumont, Earl of Buchan and Alice Comyn.
Isabel was born in about 1320. She had nine older siblings, including John de Beaumont, 2nd Lord Beaumont. Isabel's paternal grandparents were Louis of Brienne, Viscount de Beaumont, and Agnes, Viscountess de Beaumont. Her maternal grandparents were Alexander Comyn, Sheriff of Aberdeen and Joan le Latimer.
She married Henry of Grosmont, 1st Duke of Lancaster in 1337. Isabel bore Henry two daughters who would eventually inherit their father's estates:
- *Maud, Countess of Leicester (4 Apr 1339 – April 10, 1362), married William V, Count of Hainault. Died without surviving issue.
- Blanche, Countess of Lancaster (25 March 1345 – September 12, 1369), married John of Gaunt , son of Edward III of England , by whom she had three surviving children. Blanche inherited all her father's estates after the death of her sister.
Isabel died of the plague in 1361 at Leicester Castle . She was buried in Newark Abbey, Leicester. Her husband also died of the plague in March 1361.
Through Blanche, Isabel was an ancestress of Englands's Royal House of Lancaster , with Henry IV of England being her grandson. Philippa of Lancaster, Queen consort of Portugal, was also her grandchild.

- BLANCHE, DUCHESS OF LANCASTER (1345-1369), As wife of John of Gaunt and mother of King Henry IV, Blanche (often known as Blanche of Lancster) had a considerable impact on the direction of English history despite her short lifespan. She was born on 25 Mar 1345, the younger of two daughters in the family of Henry Grosmont, duke of Lancaster, and his wife, Isabella (or Isabel) de Beaumont. Lancaster died in 1361 (or, according to some sources, in 1360) leaving no heir, and his elder daughter (Matilda, or Maud) died in 1362 without any children, so Blanche inherited the vast family estates in northern England. These lands provided a power base for John of Gaunt, whom she had married at Reading Abbey on 13 May 1359, and allowed him to maintain influential positions at the court of his father, King Edward III, and Edward's successor, Richard II.
- The marriage, although undoubtedly arranged for financial and political reasons (Henry Grosmont was one of King Edward's most senior advisors). was apparently a happy one, yielding three daughters and four sons. Four of the children died before reaching adulthood, but Philippa (born in 1360) became queen consort of Portugal by marrying King John I; Elizabeth (born in 1363or 1364) married three times (one husband, John Holland, duke of Exeter, was a half-brother of Richard II and remained loyal to him as other support dwindled); and Henry (born in 1366 or 1367) deposed King Richard in 1399. Blanche succembed to bugonic plague at Bolingbroke Castle, a Lancaster stronghold in Lincolnshire, on 12 September 1369 and was interred in St. Paul's Cathedral, London. Thirty years later, her husband, who had taken two other wives, was buried beside her, but the locations of the graves are no longer known. See also LANCASTER, HOUSE OF.
