About Jacob Grewell

brief biography

Jacob Grewell (or Gruwell) was the son of John Grewell (or Gruwell) and Mary Cook. He was born c.1710 in Little Creek, Kent County, Delaware and died there in 1756. He married Sarah Cole c.1733 in Delaware. They had five known children. Sarah Cole was born c. 1713 in Delaware and died in 1810 in Delaware,

Jacob Gruwell, as the eldest son of John Gruwell and Mary Cook, was named first in his father's Will as well as the Administrator and primary beneficiary in his mother's Will. He inherited the family plantation "Aberdeen" upon her death in 1748. Jacob, acting as Administrator, paid the bond for his mother Mary's will, signing in his own hand as "Growell".

Jacob first appears on the Kent County tax lists in 1748 for Little Creek Hundred, apparently because of his new status as a land owner. Tax lists for Little Creek Hundred from 1749 through 1751 have not survived. Jacob is then recorded on the Little Creek Hundred tax lists from 1752 through 1755 when on 13 May 1755, Jacob, yeoman, sold all his remaining rights to "Aberdeen" for 5 shillings to Benjamin Brown (a Benjamin Brown bought a section of Aberdeen before mother Mary's death). Jacob is again listed on the tax lists in 1756, however, the word "removed" is recorded after his name. The only other reference to Jacob Gruwell is in the Delaware History which mentions his son Peter who fought and died in the Revolutionary War.

The name of Jacob's wife is said to have been Sarah, however, no marriage license or church records have been located. No further birth, marriage, death, or burial records for Jacob Gruwell has been discovered, and the evidence for Jacob's children is based upon oral tradition.
