JAMES HAMILTON OF BARNECLUITH

James Hamilton of Barnecluith, here treated, is the son of Robert Hamilton of Barnecluith. He appears to have lent some money to David Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh, or to have inherited money that the laird of Bothwellhaugh owed to his father, for he is mentioned in his father's testament dative ad omissa: "Item mair be the sd umqll David conforme to his band grantit to James Hamiltone of Barnecluith sone to the defunct of the dait the xxiij day of ffebr 1615 yeirs foirsd regrat in the buiks of counsell & raisit thrupon of the dait the fourt day of Nor 1620 yeirs given to the defunct assignay constitute by the sd umqll James be his assignation of the dait the ffourt day of febr 1617 yeirs the soume of lxvj li. xiij s, iiij d. prinll soume xiij li. vj s. iij d. of expensss wt the @rent of the sd prinll soume". Death

A date of death has not been identified for James Hamilton of Barncluith. He was alive on 4 February 1617, the date upon which he transferred ownership of the debt owed to him by David Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh to his father, Robert Hamilton of Barncluith, but it would appear that he may have died before 4 November 1620, when his assignation in favour of his father was registered in the books of Council and Session. He certainly died before 13 December 1654, the date upon which his nephew Archibald Hamilton, burgess of Edinburgh, was confirmed as his grandfather's executor dative ad omissa.
