About James Johnstone of Johnstone
JAMES JOHNSTONE of Johnstone is first mentioned in 1504, when he and his father are taken bound as mutual sureties not to molest the Murrays of Oockpool.4 He was probably then of age, and therefore could not be the son of Marion Scott above named.
Sir James (X) de Johnstone ws created "Lord Johnstone of Johnstone" under great seal by James IV in 1509.
James, in 1504, was surety for his father, and probably of age. He had, on 2 November 1509, a charter from King James IV of the lands of Johnstone and others, apprised for justiciary fines due by his father Adam. In 1516 he had a charter from King James V of the lands of Whitrigs and others in the lordship of Corrie. In 1523 he was one of the keepers of the West Marches. He died in August 1524. His wife was Mary, eldest daughter of John, 4th Lord Maxwell.
Origins
Adam Johnstone, son of John Johnstone, is referred to on 13 February 1489-90 as brother and heir of the late John Johnstone of that ilk. He was, in 1498, concerned in an attack of the house of Glendinning. He died before 21 November 1509.
Sir Adam Johnstone was apparently twice married, though the name of his first wife has not been discovered.
The name of his second wife was Marion Scott, widow of Archibald Carruthers, younger of Mouswald. Marion Scott's first husband was still alive in June 1484.1 Marion survived Adam, and was alive in March 1511.2
