Obituary
ONE OF NELSON'S EARLIEST SETTLERS
Death this morning removed another of the pioneer settlers of the Nelson province - Mr. James Newport, in his 82nd year. Mr Newport nine weeks ago has a paralytic stroke from which he never recovered. Born in Middlesex (Eng.) Mr. Newport took passage for New Zealand in the ship "Sir Charles Forbes", and arrived in Nelson in August, 1842. He Settled in Brook-street, being one of the first two or three settlers to reside in that locality. Here, and also in the Maitai Valley, he carried on sheep farming up to eight years ago, when he removed to Tasman-street. The late Mr. Newport married Miss Vant, who arrived in Nelson with her mother in the ship "London" on the 12th April 1842. Mrs. Newport survives her husband and she, with a large grown-up family, will have the sympathy of many friends scattered throughout the colony.
