James was a Lakota Sioux man of the Loafer band of Brule Sioux Indians, Upper Brulé (Ȟeyáta Wičháša Oyáte) Rosebud Sioux Tribe...(Brulé, or Sicangu, is a branch of the Lakota nation, they are often called Southern Lakȟóta.)

The Rosebud Reservation was home to Brulé and other bands of Sioux Indians who were a subtribe of the Teton division of the great Dakota tribe (Dakota, Lakota, Nakota). They are mentioned by Lewis and Clark (1804) as the Tetons of the Burnt Woods, numbering about 300 men, “who rove on both sides of the Missouri, White, and Teton rivers.” In 1806 they were on the east side of the Missouri from the mouth of the White to Teton river. Hayden describes the country inhabited by them in 1850 as on the headwaters of the White and Niobrara... In 1890 the Upper Brulé on Rosebud reservation, South Dakota, numbered 3,245; the Lower Brulé at Crowcreek and Lower Brulé agency, South Dakota, 1,026.

The group is divided geographically into the Kheyatawichasha or Upper Brule, the Kutawichasha or Lower Brule, and the Brule of the Platte.

1 Esahateaketarpar (Isanyati?),
2 Warchinktarhe,
3 Choketartowomb (Chokatowela),
4 Ozash (see Wazhazha),
5 Menesharne (see Minisala).

In 1880 Tatankawakan, a Brule, gave to J. O. Dorsey the names of 13 bands of the Brule, Upper and Lower:
1 Iyakoza
2 Chokatowela
3 Shiyolanka
4 Homna

Note: there is much confusion, especiallly on FamilySearch, as to the suffix of James McCloskey. there is a Sr., a Jr. and a III that are continually confused. It becomes more important to ignore the suffix and relay on the dates and the names of the mothers, or by matching allotment numbers. This James was third James in line James Sr. and James Jr. but does not to appears to have used the suffix III.
Biography:
James McCloskey was born c. 1868 (some later censuses say 1858) to parents James McClosky and Mollie McCloskey (Buchanan). He was know to have had one brother named Frank.

James attended the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, a member of the Sioux Nation, entering at age 13, he attended the school from November 30, 1882 and departed on June 13, 1887. His file contains a student information card listing two outings, and a report after leaving indicating that he was working as a rancher in 1910.

In school documentation James McCloskey's name is also spelled James Mcloskey. He is also known as Jimmy.

In a letter dated May 26, 1887 by Capt. R.H. Pratt, james is listed on line 62 as having been on a list of students to be Returned to their homes for May 1887 (see: https://carlisleindian.dickinson.edu/documents/list-students-be-ret...). On Friday, June 17, 1887, the Carlisle newspaper The Indian Helper (Vol. 2, No. 45), indicates taht James McCloskey began his trip home at midnight, June 17, 1887. (See: https://carlisleindian.dickinson.edu/publications/indian-helper-vol...)

The Loafer band, of which James mcCloskey was a member, formed about Fort Laramie and the North Platte trading posts in the 1850s. Most were Oglalas and Brules in-married with trading and army personnel, but a Loafer speaker in council in 1867 said the band included "grandmothers from all the bands". The band went to Whetstone Agency on the Missouri in the period 1868-70. Ultimately some rejoined the Oglalas at Red Cloud Agency, but a significant number remained at the Brule agency as it moved up and down White River in the 1870s. It formed a single band organization with the Corn band, hence references to the "Corn band and Loafers" etc.

Teton depictions of historical events on animals hide record Brule bands living in the White River area as early as 1794.

James married Ida Bourdeaux on August 15, 1887 after returning home from Carlisle according to Rosebud Mission Church Records, and they had 7 children, two of whom died at a young age.

According to the book Vanished in Hiawatha, author Carla Joinson suggests that James was diagnosed with imbecility, high-grade when he was committed on an unknown date from the Rosebud Agency. (The high-grade imbecile may be one of those known as odd, peculiar and erratic. Without revealing actual definite stigmata, the whole physique may so lend itself to or be warped by mental idiosyncrasies as to give a general impression to the careful observer of something different from the ordinary. He may be physically normal and to all appearances mentally also.)

James was employed by the asylum as a laborer prior to discharge for $1.00/day. He was discharged by Dr. Turner as cured on May 5, 1905 (but maybe not fully?)

Ida and James remained married through the commitment of James, but they seperated in 1906 (this appears to be shortly after James returned from the Canton Asylum) and Ida married George Iron Deer in 1906, the daughters of Ida staying with her. George was a Sioux from North Dakota but they resided on the Rosebud Reservation. In the 1910 census the remaining three daughters, Ada, Susie and Elizabeth are all shown with the surname Iron Deer so one assumes that they were adopted. In the 1930 census, James is shown living with his daughter Ada in teh household of her husband John David Whipple, Sr., along with his other daughters who are indicated as step-daughters of Mr. Whipple. George Iron Deer died a short time after marriage and mother Ida moved in with daughter Susie Iron Deer (Whipple).

In about 1930 John McCloskey moved into the house of his daughter Ada Mc Closkey (Whipple) and her husband John "Dance Pipe" Whipple along with their three (3) children. Ida had moved into the house of her daughter Susie McCloskey (Whipple) and her husband Charles Gustas Whipple.

Reseearch Notes:
-(1) James McCloskey, 19, married Ida Bordeaux, 18, on Monday 15 Aug 1887 at Calvary Church, Okreek, DT. Parents are James McCloskey (deceased) and Mollie McCloskey (Red Hill); and John Bordeaux (deceased) and Louise Bordeaux. Witnesses to the marriage were Sammie Bordeaux, Sister E. Eskridge and Mr. William Holmes. (Source: Marriage record from Rosebud Mission Church Records, Film #007856517, Image 153)
-(2) Rosebud Episcopal Mission Church Records, 1885-1993, Film #007856517, Image 120 of 612 shows she divorced James McCloskey and married George Tarce Maza (Iron Deer), date of marriage not given, but on the 1910 census of Todd County it is stated they had been married for 4 years, which would mean they married in 1906.
-(3) On the US Indigenous People Records, Rosebud, Todd, SD, 1927, Image 231 of 802 appears Ida McCloseky Iron Deer Leader Charge, head. Unknown which Leader Charge she was married to but it appears to be Joseph Leader Charge as they were sponsors together at several baptisms in the early 1920's.
-(4) Record states she died at age 72 from epilepsy (per Rosebud Mission of the Episcopal Church, DS/II, Film #007856516, Book F, Images 526 of 554).

-1887 census of the Loafer band James may have been there as Jas McCloskey age 17, boy (no parents listed)
-In the 1907 census both Jas. and Ida are shown as Head, Jas is living BHS, Ida has the children Ada, Susie and Elizabeth.
-In the 1910 census daughters Ada, Susie and Elizabeth were using the surname Iron Deer so one assumes that they were adopted.
-Beginning in the 1915 census, agents began indicating his birth in 1858, not 1868, additing 10 years to his age!
-No censuses were taken in 1908, 1913, 1914, 1935
-Beginning in the 1934 census, agents began indicating his birth reduced by 10 years!
-1935 and 1936 were supplemental roll years, many chages occurred on the Reservation but none indicated for the McCloskey family. Census rolls resume again in 1937.
-In the census of 1937 the Rosebud jurisdiction included the Yankton Sioux Reservation which added 2,048 Sioux Indiians to the census rolls.
-1938 and 1939 were supplemental roll years with no changes to James McCloskey indicated
-There were no Rosebud censuses performed in 1940 and 1941
-1942 was a supplemental roll year with no changes indicated for james McCloskey and appears to be the last census roll for the Reservation
-Based on the Rosebud Episcopal Mission Church Records entry for the death of James, he was 81 years old. At 81, his date of birth is confirmed as 1868.
