About James Turler Stout
NOTE: James Turler Stout is almost always confused with James Stout. These were two separate men.
The parents of James Stout -- part of an enormous Stout clan that lived in Amwell Township in the 1700s and 1800s -- are unknown, as is his early life. He married Lydia Manners, the daughter of a wealthy Amwell land owner, around 1753, as detailed in The History of the Stout Family, By Nathan Stout, 1823, pg. 28: "Lydia married James Stout, who nicknamed himself 'Turler' by whom she had three sons and four daughters." (Although perhaps"Turler" -- or "Turlough" as it is seen in tax records -- was his mother's maiden name?)
Lydia's father, John Manners, was born in Yorkshire, England, and purchased an enormous tract of land in the New Jersey territory in 1718. Her mother was born Rebecca Stout; in 1737, her brother Benjamin bought 60 acres adjoining the Manners plantation. Benjamin, and another neighbor, Samuel Stout, must be related to James in some way.
Life in Amwell Township
Over the next 20 years, the couple had seven children: Rebecca (1754-?), Isaac (1759-1833), Jesse (1760-1834), Anthony (1763-1837), Rachel (1768-1865), Anne (1770-1803), and Elizabeth (?).
In 1770, Lydia's father died. The July 1770 will gifts to his daughter "£15 and the use of 70 acres she now lives on in Amwell Township, and after her death to her surviving children." James Turler Stout is recorded in Amwell tax records in the 1780s with 70 acres of land.
A James Stout of Amwell Township sold land in Lebanon Township 1800 (deed). A later deed from the same year mentions "Cornelius Stout, his son." A different man, perhaps.
Some notes on death
A James Stout Sr., died Aug. 12, 1782, and deeded his Amwell Township plantation to his son James. Another James Stout died in 1784 in Amwell.
Two James Stouts
"Corrects an assumption made in Stout and Allied Families (1951), page 35; namely that this James and James Stout, "the Turler," were identical."-- The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey, vol. 37-38 (38, Pg 13-14). But which was which?
The 1780 Amwell tax records mention James Stout, a trader in Hopewell.
Anthony Stout's indictment says he is "late of Hopewell Township." Perhaps this record is from a different Anthony Stout?
