James Veazey, II

A Patriot of the American Revolution for NORTH CAROLINA. DAR Ancestor # A118399

James appears on the rolls of Lt Col Lee's Legion from Maryland from March 8, 1780 as a soldier in the Revolutionary War.

Birth recorded in St. Stephen's register page 84.

Was a Revolutionary soldier serving as a private in the Maryland line. He served in Lee's Legion, Maryland Troops 1776. he moved to GA via NC where he served as a private in the GA Militia (see McCall's Roster, page 171). In 1784 he was given a land grant in Washington County GA for his services in the war. He was living in Old Wilkes County at this time (later Green Co).

I have the report by Ann Veazey Davis. She was a thorough researcher as far as I can tell.

James Veazey (James E, John) was born August 17,1725 in Cecil Co., Md. and died December 17, 1789 in Powelton, Hancock, Ga. He married Elizabeth Hollingsworth August 31, 1750 in Cecil Co. Md. daughter of Zebulon Hollingsworth and Ann Mauldin. She was born February 6, 1727/28 in Cecil Co.,Md. and died May 21, 1812 in Powelton, Hancock, Greene Co., Ga.

The elder James Veazey's will recorded in Hancock Co. on 12-17-1789, naming his wife Elizabeth Hollingsworth Johnston.

A few years later there is recorded the will of the younger James Jr. Naming his wife Ann Johnston and Children. This will ws written in April 1795 and recorded in December of that same year. He only lived six years longer than his step-father, who was also recorded in one place as his "cousin"

She was born 2-6-1727/28 Cecil Co. Md. died 5-21-1812 Powellton, Hancock, Greene, Ga. The Johnston children were:

FRANCINA VEAZEY; (James, James E. John) was born 3-24-1766 in Granville Co., N.C. and died 1833 in Hancock, Ga. She married William MacLellan November 21, 1781 in Orange Co., N.C. He was born 1759 in Pennsylvania, and died 12-1-1824 in Hancock Co., Ga.

His name was spelled MacLellan (Later McLellan was spelling)

Note One source said born Cecil Co. Abt. 1761. Two Francinas listed, and dieing in Orange Co., N.C. Francina was listed in the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery. (I have more notes)

William MacLellan born 1759 was a Revolutionary War Veteran: Pvt. McRee's Co., 10th Reg., N.C. He enlisted April 1781 and left service in April 1782. Recorded P. 1118 of the State Records of N.C.

He died 12-1-1824 in Hancock Co., Ga.

Francina applied for Land Distribution as REv. Widow in Lee County, Ga. in 1831. Williams Will was probated in 1824 and recorded in the courthouse at Sparta, Ga. Children William mentioned:

They were married 11-21-1781 in Orange Co., N.C.

William Jr. McLellan is buried McLellan Wilkins Cemetery Holmes Co., Ms.

Mary Wilkins, had six children, Mary and Solomon were the youngest and apparently lived with their mother after she married William McLellan. Mary married a Kendall and they are buried in the McLellan-Wilkins cemetery.

He was Tax Assessor of Tallapoosa Co., Ga. for several years. He owned a river boat and was a Commissioner.

James Veazey and his son, Zebulon, are recorded as having owned land in Granville County, NC at the same time that Edward Veazey and his son, Elijah, appeared in the records. He witnessed a document in Orange County in 1754. he purchased 357 acres in Granville County, 08JUL1763. He witnessed his brother, Edward's will in Granville County in 1771. There are three Land Grants recorded in the NC Secretary of State's office to just plain "James Veazey" and five grants to James (J L) Veazey from 1779 to 1783. Of the five to James, or J L, James will be shown in one place and J L in another. Two of the J L or James grants also have the Jr title. These holdings were sold from 1786 to 1787. James, his sons, and the mysterious James L Veazey, Jr evidently decided to try greener pastures of Hancock and Greene Counties in GA. Cathcart's Bible Cyclopedia lists NC as the birthplace of Rev John Veazey, the youngest son of James, on March 29, 1769. In his will he left his plantation near Powelton, GA to his youngest son, John Veazey. In the 1990s there is a place shown on the official GA map as Veazey, GA however there was no sign to indicate the location of this place. There is a bridge over IH-20 that denotes Veazey Rd.

The James and Elizabeth Hollingsworth Johnson Veazey family were close neighbors ans associates of Rev Silas Mercer and his son Rev Jesse Mercer, who is stated to have been born in Halifax county, NC. Halifax County joined Granville County at this time. Both Mercers served the Powelton Baptist Church where the Veazeys were members. Rev Pryor Gardner Veazey also served this church and is buried in front of the church in Powerton, GA. One account said that the Mercer family and the Veazey family were just good friends but did not believe that they were related. Evidently, that writer did not know that James' mother was a Mercer.

No record has been found to date to indicate what relationship, if any, these Mercers were to Mary Mercer who married James Veazey in Cecil County in 1716, however, there seems to be a good deal of circumstantial evidence that would indicate some relationship. This Mercer family were the founders of the Baptist University in GA that bears their name. Research at this time indicates that Jesse Mercer was born in Halifax County, NC and that his ancestors had come into the Norfolk, VA area. If we think of the water transportation in those very early days of the settlement of the county, we will need but to look at a map to see that Norfolk, VA is not that far from the Delmarva Penninsula right up the Chesapeake Bay.

In 1786, James was granted 100 acres of land in Wilkes County, GA. He was the progenitor of most of the GA-AL-MS-LA-TX, etc. Veazeys.
