About Jane Askew
Obituary
The death is announced of Mrs Jane Askew, of Riwaka, relict of the late William Askew, at the age of 85 years. Mrs Askew was born in Somersetshire in 1833, and with her parents (Mr and Mrs Jacob Gifford), sister and six brothers she sailed for New Zealand in the Thomas Starks, arriving in Nelson in March, 1843. The family first made their home at the Upper Moutere, where they resided for about five years. Mr Gifford then took up land at Appleby, and it was there Mrs Askew lived till her marriage in 1857. From then up to the time of her husband's death, seventeen years ago, she resided in Riwaka. The "Star" says that her kindly and sympathetic nature and her willingness at all times to assist in sickness brought her many friends. She leaves a family of three sons, Messrs Edward Askew (Sandy Bay), Albert and Manson Askew (Riwaka), and four daughters, Mrs T. C. Mason (Nelson), Mrs W. Thompson (Te Kuiti), Mrs J. McFarlane and Mrs G. H. Budden (Motueka),
